Chapter 5 Findings<br />

This section described the case study site. It also reported the findings from the<br />

documentary analysis which served as one source <strong>of</strong> evidence to inform the case<br />

study. The documents analysed included the staff rosters, the residential unit’s<br />

philosophy <strong>of</strong> care, and the residents’ sets <strong>of</strong> documentation. The next section<br />

will report the findings from the interviews and observations.<br />

5.8 Findings from Interviews and Observations<br />

This section describes the findings from the interviews and observations<br />

undertaken in phase one <strong>of</strong> this study. Firstly, an overview <strong>of</strong> the residents and<br />

staff in the research unit on the days the observations were undertaken is<br />

provided. Secondly, the findings from the analysis <strong>of</strong> the interview and<br />

observation data are reported.<br />

5.9 Observations Day One<br />

One CNM2, one CNM1 and four staff nurses were rostered on duty. Four HCAs<br />

were rostered. The staff ranged in age from 29 years to 57 years. The length <strong>of</strong><br />

time working on the unit ranged from two years to 12 years and the contracted<br />

hours <strong>of</strong> each staff member on duty were a mix <strong>of</strong> those working reduced hours<br />

(n=3) and those working full-time hours (n=7).<br />
