sticks touched, he should draw a mark <strong>on</strong> what <strong>the</strong> sticks<br />

touched. Ano<strong>the</strong>r man held a large hammer <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> a sword to<br />

frighten <strong>the</strong> ghosts. It was difficult for <strong>the</strong>m because <strong>the</strong>y had<br />

to do a lot of running.<br />

The lama chanted inside <strong>the</strong> house with an angry<br />

expressi<strong>on</strong>. He told <strong>the</strong>m to run everywhere <strong>the</strong> ghosts were<br />

hiding. Once again, without any<strong>on</strong>e telling <strong>the</strong> lama, he told<br />

<strong>the</strong>m which family's house to run to. For example, he said<br />

what kind of dog that family had, <strong>the</strong> number <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> color of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

livestock, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> so <strong>on</strong>. He was always right. O<strong>the</strong>r villagers<br />

stayed in <strong>the</strong> house <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> whistled as loudly as <strong>the</strong>ir skill<br />

allowed, luring <strong>the</strong> ghosts into that house, creating a ghost<br />

hall.<br />

The ghosts were captured in <strong>the</strong> big lea<strong>the</strong>r bag.<br />

When <strong>the</strong> runners returned to <strong>the</strong> lama, <strong>the</strong>y opened <strong>the</strong> bag<br />

for <strong>the</strong> lama to inspect, but we were blind to whatever he saw.<br />

Inside <strong>the</strong> bag were pieces of wood with black lines drawn <strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>m. The lama chanted over those pieces every time <strong>the</strong> men<br />

ran out <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> came back. They ran back <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> forth like this for<br />

quite some time.<br />

Many women shouted frantically, pulled <strong>the</strong>ir hair,<br />

became hysterical, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> were so str<strong>on</strong>g that young villagers<br />

could not hold <strong>the</strong>m down. When <strong>the</strong>y were pulled to <strong>the</strong> lama,<br />

he hit <strong>the</strong>ir back <strong>on</strong>ce with his fist, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y calmed down.<br />

How incredible he was! At last, <strong>the</strong> lama said, "Well d<strong>on</strong>e! All<br />

<strong>the</strong> devils have been captured." Only <strong>the</strong>n could he <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong><br />

runners rest. Then we all returned to our homes, which were<br />

disordered from people running around inside.<br />

The lama said he could bury <strong>the</strong> captured ghosts in a<br />

hole, but that this was not ideal, because after many years<br />

passed, we would hear <strong>the</strong> ghosts moan. Therefore, he<br />

burned <strong>the</strong> pieces of wood from inside <strong>the</strong> bag. Afterward, no<br />

<strong>on</strong>e saw a ghost. There was not even a single rumor about a<br />

ghost. We were grateful to <strong>the</strong> lama for helping us. We<br />

students <strong>the</strong>n went to <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> from school without fear.<br />
