Regardless of how much I liked our pigs, I knew <strong>the</strong>y<br />
were to be killed for meat. In <strong>Tibetan</strong> agricultural villages, pigs<br />
are more pitiful than any o<strong>the</strong>r animal. They <strong>on</strong>ly eat leftover<br />
food, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y get slaughtered. Before my family killed<br />
some of our pigs, I visited <strong>the</strong>m <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> scratched <strong>the</strong>ir itches for<br />
<strong>the</strong> last time. Tears of sympathy flowed down my dark cheeks<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> splattered <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir bodies. I said goodbye to <strong>the</strong>m for <strong>the</strong><br />
last time. As I stood up to leave, <strong>the</strong>y lifted <strong>the</strong>ir heads as if<br />
begging me to release <strong>the</strong>m <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> drive <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong> mountains. I<br />
left, covering my face with my wet h<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>s.<br />
We hang pigs with ropes to kill <strong>the</strong>m. The tamer <strong>the</strong> pig,<br />
<strong>the</strong> easier it is to kill it because you can approach <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> put a rope<br />
around its neck while o<strong>the</strong>r people st<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> ready to pull as hard<br />
<strong>the</strong>y can. Sometimes we must chase pigs in <strong>the</strong> pigsty to put <strong>the</strong><br />
rope around <strong>the</strong>ir necks, which is even more terrifying for <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
It is better to hang <strong>the</strong>m easily <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> quickly. We used to burn<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir bristles off with a fire outside, but recently people no<br />
l<strong>on</strong>ger do that. Instead, we boil water, pour it over <strong>the</strong> carcass,<br />
pluck <strong>the</strong> bristles out, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> exchange <strong>the</strong>m with Han people for<br />
red pepper.<br />
My family's pigs were very fat, thanks to my hard work<br />
in herding <strong>the</strong>m. Afterwards, all <strong>the</strong> villagers began herding<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir pigs in summer. I was <strong>the</strong> first pers<strong>on</strong> in my home area to<br />
herd pigs, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> I might have been <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e who felt<br />
compassi<strong>on</strong> for <strong>the</strong>m. The elders chant mani after <strong>the</strong>y kill a<br />
pig, but <strong>the</strong>ir demeanor is not sympa<strong>the</strong>tic. They simply believe<br />
that killing is a sin <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> chant to purify <strong>the</strong>mselves.<br />
