he summer holiday seemed to pass as quickly as a week<br />
in school <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> it was suddenly time for me to start grade<br />
<strong>on</strong>e, which I had been yearning for. Our new classroom<br />
was well organized, with enough desks <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> chairs for all <strong>the</strong><br />
students. Posters of Western <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Chinese scientists <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> thinkers,<br />
such as Newt<strong>on</strong>, Einstein, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lu Xun were pasted <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> walls.<br />
A red <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> white banner above <strong>the</strong> blackboard carried Chairman<br />
Mao's exhortati<strong>on</strong>: Study hard <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> make progress everyday.<br />
Posters of famous <strong>Tibetan</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Tibetan</strong> proverbs <strong>on</strong> educati<strong>on</strong><br />
were c<strong>on</strong>spicuously absent.<br />
We had new books <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> new teachers. Everything was<br />
new except ourselves. We should have had an unprecedented<br />
experience in this grade with serious teaching but it was not to<br />
be. I liked <strong>the</strong> classroom <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> our schoolbags were heavy with<br />
books that had unfamiliar Chinese characters <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> colorful<br />
illustrati<strong>on</strong>s. These intrigued us <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> we wanted to learn as<br />
quickly as possible.<br />
Bro<strong>the</strong>r was too shy to teach me anything from my new<br />
books, so I asked Fa<strong>the</strong>r to teach me, but he did not know<br />
Chinese. However, Fa<strong>the</strong>r wrote my name in <strong>Tibetan</strong> in each<br />
book so I was less likely to lose <strong>the</strong>m. My name written in<br />
<strong>Tibetan</strong> looked like <strong>the</strong> legs of an ant <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> gave me a strange<br />
feeling. We <strong>on</strong>ly started learning <strong>Tibetan</strong> in <strong>the</strong> fourth grade.<br />
I learned as much as <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r students did. Our teachers<br />
were resp<strong>on</strong>sible <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> cared about us, except for our arithmetic<br />
teacher. They generally taught well <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> were not like <strong>the</strong><br />
teachers in <strong>the</strong> xueqianban who often beat us with a bamboo<br />
stick. The Chinese teachers were better than our <strong>Tibetan</strong><br />
teachers. They were resp<strong>on</strong>sible <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> taught us until we<br />
understood what <strong>the</strong>y were trying to teach. Their purpose in<br />
teaching was not to go through <strong>the</strong> books as quickly as possible,<br />
but to teach us as much as we could learn, even if we could not<br />
finish <strong>the</strong> textbook. However, when <strong>the</strong>y were tired, <strong>the</strong>y<br />
