4 FIRST TOY W hen I was six, no family in our village had a television. Telling stories about King Gesar was the main form of entertainment for Gr<strong>and</strong>mother <strong>and</strong> me as just the two of us passed our days at home. When she told me stories, I could see <strong>and</strong> imagine it all, as though what she described was on a screen. I had no plastic guns or toy cars to attract other children to play, <strong>and</strong> they often refused to let me join them. Consequently, Gr<strong>and</strong>mother was both my chief playmate <strong>and</strong> storyteller. I reveled in listening to stories during my childhood, <strong>and</strong> from these stories I had an idea for a toy to play with. The weather was neither hot nor cold one late autumn day as the sun beamed weakly. There was not a bit of wind <strong>and</strong> it was warm enough to sit outside. Mother, my two sisters, <strong>and</strong> my second elder brother, whom I call Gaga, had gone to gather firewood as usual. Tjobajo was at school. Father had a bad cold <strong>and</strong> was staying at home with Gr<strong>and</strong>mother <strong>and</strong> me. I helped Gr<strong>and</strong>mother outside to enjoy the warmth as usual <strong>and</strong> asked, "Shall I bring your sleeping mat out today, Gr<strong>and</strong>mother?" She answered, "No, dear son. Since the day you started helping me, I've slept more comfortably. I don't think there are any more lice to squash. Today, I'll look for lice on your head instead." Since I liked listening to King Gesar stories, I did not want her to look for lice on my head. I was afraid she would ask me to tell her stories, because she told me stories when I killed lice for her. But I could not refuse, either, because she told me once that if she did not delouse my head, then the lice would burrow into my brain <strong>and</strong> kill me. I asked right away, "Gr<strong>and</strong>mother, will you tell me a King Gesar story?" "Of course not. This time you must tell me a story because I'm going to look for lice on your head," Gr<strong>and</strong>mother said. I thought she was deliberately making things difficult ▪19▪
