140TRAVEL$ENSEthe issue and assume constant personal productivity. Bottom line question:Shouldn’t you be doing something else?We can track several trip statistics, such as trip costs saved (or not) versusairline trip, trip time saved (or not) versus airline trip, time leaving home andtime returning home. The last two are particularly interesting to passengers asit describes their trip in start terms. We can track productive hours saved. This calculates productivity hour by hourover the entire trip, calculated on a per-passenger basis via three differentaircraft. In essence, it calculates free time newly available to the passengers as aresult of their utilization of the most time-efficient travel method. It’s adifferent, unique perspective on the trip. Cumulatively, it can illustrate thebenefit of the flight department to the company over time.Travel$ense does not value, but does mention, what we call the “unquantifiedbenefits” of business aircraft use. These include, but are not limited to:• industrial security (uncontrolled public exposure),• personal safety and peace of mind,• management control of efficient, reliable scheduling,• positive corporate image,• attraction and retention of key people,• decrease in post-trip fatigue and increased productivity,• reduction in personnel overhead,• cycle time reductions from compound productivity gains,• use for customer travel. These are noted by the program, but no monetary value has been placed uponthem. They are printed at the beginning of the Trip Report so that the user candecide what value to place on them when considering various travelalternatives. After all these factors are considered, and after running several trips throughTravel$ense, we’ve discovered or rediscovered several truisms.• Employee travel time, often overlooked because it is disagreeably complexto calculate, is a substantial cost for business.• Business aircraft are cost-effective on most typical business aircraft trips, without placing a dollar value on unquantified intangibles.Copyright © 1999, National Business Aviation Association, Inc.
