TRAVEL$ENSEThe catalyst for <strong>Travel$ense</strong> was a spreadsheet developed by Brad Vineyard,chief pilot, Amoco, Houston. The Vineyard spreadsheet was brought to <strong>NBAA</strong>’sattention by Al Lane, <strong>NBAA</strong>’s chairman (1993–1996), chief pilot for Amoco, andBrad Vineyard’s boss. Lane discussed the issue with other members of <strong>NBAA</strong>’sBoard of Directors and with <strong>NBAA</strong>’s president, John W. Olcott. From thosediscussions, the idea for a standalone Windows application emerged in thesummer of 1995. After substantial conceptual development, full Board approvalwas granted in late 1995.Landmark research on many of the management issues raised by businessaircraft operations was published by PRC Aviation in 1991 and revised in 1992in a study titled Business Aircraft Operations, Financial Benefits and IntangibleAdvantages. Substantial portions of that research, commissioned by <strong>NBAA</strong> andthe General Aviation Manufacturers Association, have been adapted for use inthis User’s <strong>Guide</strong> with the permission of PRC Aviation.The National Business Aviation Association and the General AviationManufacturers Association recognize and appreciate the substantialcontributions of this study to the business aviation industry. The study’s authorsinclude: the late R. Dixon Speas, Otto A. Becker, Robert W. Blake, Daniel D.Bullick, John L. Conte, Hugh S. Crim, Richard M. Kip, William R. Nesbit, MichaelE. Philburn, Jeremy M. Papantonio, Noel G. Preston and Richard J. Queenan.Several concepts incorporated into <strong>Travel$ense</strong> are properly attributed tospecific individuals. Among them:• The idea of tracking and reporting but not valuing Non-Business HoursAway From Home can be attributed to Skip Reed, chief pilot of the H.B.Zachery Company of San Antonio, TX.• Offsetting Value of Productive Time Enroute was based on input from PhilMichele, vice president, marketing, Cessna, Wichita.• Productive Hours Saved was the result of discussions with Mike Brewer,chief pilot, Chevron, Houston.Early program design and coding was done by SYSNET of Bethesda, MD. TheSYSNET team was led by Angelo Kostopolous.Primary <strong>Travel$ense</strong> engineering was accomplished by Dr. Ian Willson andNatasha Willson of Personal Expertware of Redmond, WA. A significant amountof the program’s innovation and utility is attributable to their efforts.Extensive improvements to <strong>Travel$ense</strong> have been made as a direct result ofsuggestions from the schedulers, pilots and managers that use <strong>Travel$ense</strong> everyday. Their professional expertise and commitment to excellence have made<strong>Travel$ense</strong> what it is today.<strong>Travel$ense</strong> was produced by David W.
