160IMPROVED ENROUTE WORK PRODUCTIVITYTRAVEL$ENSEThe valuation of this benefit requires that the number of hours spent in the airon business aircraft be accumulated for all travelers for the year. This time isthen reduced by 30 minutes per flight for each individual, and 50 percent of theremaining available working time is converted to the financial value of timesaved by the appropriate valuation multiplier for the individuals traveling oneach trip. In cases where business aircraft operations involve repeated use ofcertain routes or flight patterns, user surveys can be helpful in determiningaverage values of available working time for similar trips and types ofpassengers.ALTERNATE TRAVEL COSTS SAVEDActual business aircraft travel for the period under study must be analyzed on aflight-by-flight basis to determine what alternate mode of transportation wouldhave been utilized in place of such flights, and what travel costs would havebeen paid. There usually will be a number of travel patterns that duplicateduring the year. This condition will ease the analytical task, but it is important toanalyze carefully each of the flight legs fully. Sufficient detail as to flight times, alternate mode travel times and categories and numbers of personnel on eachflight leg should be recorded.OVERNIGHT STAY REDUCTIONFor all one-day round trip flights completed by the business aircraft fleet, theavailability of alternate scheduled airline service must be examined todetermine the number of trips that would have required an overnight stay usingcommercial service in order to accomplish the same tasks on the samebusiness schedule. From this review, the typical additional costs for lodging, meals andtransportation can be calculated from actual company travel expense recordsor average data for the location of the stay and the requirements of the type ofpersonnel involved in the trip.COMPANY MAIL AND CARGO TRANSPORTATIONWhen business aircraft operations can utilize opportunities for this incrementalbenefit, records should be collected from actual experiences over a reasonabletime period to indicate typical levels of utilization of this service by thecompany. This data should include the routing, size and quantity of parcelscarried. An analysis then can be carried out to determine the costs that wouldhave been incurred if commercial delivery services had been utilized.Copyright © 1999, National Business Aviation Association, Inc.
