74TRAVEL$ENSEchanging it to, say, 300, and then clicking on the “Search” button. Travel$ensewill do so automatically if there are less than three alternatives, first trying 300miles and then 1,000 miles. From this list, which will automaticallyhighlight the closest commercial airport, you need to select the desiredcommercially served airport. Thisselection is critical; the airport you pickwill be the origin airport if the trip is tobe flown via the airlines, and the onewhich Travel$ense will key off of in itssearch for a comparable itinerary. Pickinga slightly closer airport with only a fewcommuter flights a day is probably not arealistic choice if a larger airport is onlya short distance further (e.g. driving toO’Hare may be better than starting atSouth Bend).Next, either confirm or tweak the drivetime from home/office/site to thiscommercially served airport. Drive timealways is defined as beginning when you start the car and ending when youarrive on airport property prior to parking or beginning to return a rental car.The default drive time is 45 minutes. You can change this number by highlightingthe 45 and changing it to any number of minutes. Then, click on “OK” (or press) and you will be returned to Tab 1. In this case we selected the closestcommercially served airport, Akron-Canton, so Travel$ense now knows to useit as the airline alternate.CONFIRMING AIRLINE AIRPORTSEven though a corporate origin airport is commercially served by the airlines, itmay not be the preferred airline airport. This is particularly true for airportsthat are infrequently served by the airlines, especially when a major airline hubis within a reasonable driving distance. It is very common for an airline hub toact as a real comparative airline alternate, rather than a local commerciallyservedairport, to take advantage of more frequent airline service or moreefficient connection schedules.Copyright © 1999, National Business Aviation Association, Inc.
