TRAVEL$ENSEflight analysis in comparison to the time required by alternate modes of travel. The value of personnel time saved can then be calculated based upon thenumber of persons in each aircraft and their job or position category.Travel$ense utilizes multipliers applied to an employee’s base salary to establishthe value of the employee’s time to the company. The default values sodesignated after analyses are 5.7 times the base salary for executive personneland 3.8 times the base salary for middle-managers and professional personnel.IMPROVED RELIABILITY SAVINGSImproved reliability of business aircraft operations results from the ability to gofrom origin to destination without intermediate stops or connections, and theflexibility to choose flight routing to avoid traffic congestion or weatherproblems. Statistics published by the U.S. Department of Transportation indicatethat scheduled airline travelers experience an average of 13 minutes delaybecause of air traffic control problems alone. This figure should be increased to15 minutes to include the random nature of other delays caused by weather, equipment problems, terminal congestion and missed connections. NBAAbelieves that this value is very conservative. The financial value of reducing these delays by the use of business aircraft canbe computed by selecting an average delay, such as the suggested 15 minutesper trip, or such other value as considered appropriate, applying this to thenumber of one-way business flights in the year, and determining the number oftravelers and the time saved for each. The appropriate value of time saved foreach individual should be computed by the method described above.MENTAL AND PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENTCalculating mental and physical performance enhancement requires thedetermination of the amount of time used by business travelers in meetings orother normal business activities during each trip made by business aircraft.159If specific individual trends cannot be maintained over a significantly long timeperiod, such as a full year, user surveys at periodic intervals can be performedto provide a representative indication of actual working time, which is affectedby the enhanced mental and physical capabilities due to the use of businessaircraft. The total hours established in this manner are then combined with theproper personnel time value multiplier to determine the financial value of thisenhanced performance. It should be noted that the enhancement of mental andphysical performance will affect the traveler both during the course of meetingsfor which the trip was undertaken and immediately following return to theindividual’s office, if such activity occurs within four to eight hours after thetravel takes place.Copyright © 1999, National Business Aviation Association, Inc.
