TRAVEL$ENSEThe ability to work enroute in business aircraft, however, is substantiallyenhanced over airline travel conditions for several reasons.153• Full privacy allows open reference to, and use of, proprietary materials, including correspondence, reports and other information.• Full opportunity is available for open discussions between members of afirm without risk of being overheard by uninvited parties.• Improved opportunity for private air-to-ground telephonecommunications.Note: Air-to-ground telephone communications are utilized heavily by manytravelers in business aircraft. More and more airline aircraft are being equippedwith air-to-ground facility service. The lack of privacy for utilization of thesefacilities in airline travel, however, erodes the value and decreases theopportunity for prudent use.The value of enroute work with the improved conditions of business aircraftcan only be estimated. Based upon extensive experience in and observation ofboth airline and business aircraft flying, NBAA estimates the savings on a “timesavings basis.” The time savings estimated is the total flight time, minus 30minutes, divided by two. The 30 minutes is deducted by assuming that the first15 minutes and the last 15 minutes of the flight will be unusable. During thefirst 15 minutes, time is occupied by adjusting to the flight circumstances andpreparing to work. The last 15 minutes is usually spent in putting things awayand preparing for landing. The division by two acknowledges that a limitedamount of work can be accomplished under airline travel conditions. Thedivision by two also is based upon a judgment that there is a higher value oftime in a business aircraft cabin environment compared to an airline cabinenvironment. In providing aircraft to allow enroute work, a company is providing anopportunity to utilize its management and/or professional resources more fully. On a large scale, increased utilization can be measured in numbers of people. On a small scale, which is usually the case, the measure is in the intangible valueof the fullest utilization of available management and/or professional talent. The almost completely isolated posture of a business aircraft cabin provides aunique opportunity for productivity. All business and professional personnelrecognize the opportunity for superior mental performance under anenvironment of relaxed and unhurried conditions. Here the telephone has not yet fully penetrated business privacy. It is notgenerally known that a businessperson can be reached enroute in a businessaircraft, and a businessperson on an aircraft will not be contacted unless he orshe desires the interruption and publicizes the phone number or other contactinformation.Copyright © 1999, National Business Aviation Association, Inc.
