2.0 Communication Disorder

Communication disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by

impairments in sending, receiving, processing or comprehending verbal, nonverbal, or

graphic language, speech, and communication. It may be developmental or acquired.

2.1. Types of disorder diagnostic criteria

2.1.1 Language disorder

Communication disorder consists of five types disorder includes language

disorder, speech sound disorder, childhood-onset fluency disorder, social

communication disorder and unspecified communication disorder.

Language disorder refers to people who have the problems of limited

vocabulary, limited sentence structure and impairments in discourse. They usually

have difficulties to express themselves and can only use limited words to form a

sentence. Moreover, their ability is below those expected of their age and

developmental level.

There are three main types of language disorder which are expressive language

disorder, receptive language disorder and mixed receptive-expressive language issues.

People who have expressive language disorder will have difficulties getting message

from others. In the same time, they have struggled to put words into sentences that

make sense. These symptoms usually show up in the early development.

In addition, receptive language disorder has several symptoms such as client

will have struggled to get the meaning of others and they will respond in ways that

does not make sense. It shows that they have differences with other normal children.

The third type of language disorder is mixed receptive-expressive language issues. It

refers to people who have struggle with understanding and using language.

According to University of Mississippi Medical Center, language disorder

common in young children. It occurs in 10 to 15 percent of those under the age of 3

years old. Besides that, language disorder may be related to hearing problems, brain

injury and damage to the central nervous system.
