5.2 Types of Learning Disorder
There are three types of learning disorders including dyslexia, dysgraphia and
dyscalculia. Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that affects reading and related
language-based processing skills. The severity would be differ to each individual
based on their condition.
In fact, there are still some effects on their reading fluency, reading
comprehension, writing and spelling. It is difficult for people with dyslexia to
associate the letters they see on the page with the sound they make. As a result,
reading is a slow, laborious, and fluent process for them.
Dyslexia is also used to describe the difficulty of putting ideas into practice.
Writing problems may include spelling, grammar, punctuation, and handwriting
difficulties.
Dyscalculia is a term used to describe the difficulty of learning concepts
related to numbers or mathematical calculations using symbols and functions.
Mathematical problems may include a sense of numbers, memorizing mathematical
facts, mathematical calculations, mathematical reasoning, and difficulties in solving
mathematical problems.
Moreover, dysgraphia is a specific learning disability that refers to an
individual's disability in handwriting and fine motor skills. Individuals with
dysgraphia will have problems such as illegible handwriting, inconsistent spacing,
poor spatial planning on paper, poor spelling, and difficulty composing writing as well
as thinking and writing at the same time.
5.3 Diagnostic Criteria
Learning disabilities can only be diagnosed after starting formal education. To
be diagnosed with specific learning disabilities, a person must meet four conditions.
The first condition is that despite receiving targeted help, you have encountered
difficulties for at least six months in at least one of the following areas such as reading
difficulties, difficulty in understanding the meaning of the content read, difficulty in
spelling, difficult to express, for example, grammar, punctuation or organizational
