Among individuals with intellectual disability, there are 4% – 16% engage in

stereotypy and self-injury, while among individuals with intellectual disability living

in residential facilities, 10% – 15% may have stereotypic movement disorder with

self-injury

For the tourette disorder, there are 0.3% – 0.8% of school-age children and

estimated that there are 3 per 1,000 of clinically identified cases in the U.S. Males are

affected more than females, with a ratio of between 2:1 and 4:1. There is insufficient

date available about the prevalence of persistent (chronic) motor or vocal tic disorder,

provisional tic disorder, other specified tic disorder, or unspecified tic disorder.

6.2 Types of Motor Disorders

People with tic disorders can have motor, vocal, or a combination of the 2

types of tics. There are seven types of motor disorders listed in the DSM-5 which are

developmental coordination disorder, stereotypic movement disorder, tourette’s

disorder, motor tic disorder, provisional tic disorder, other specifies tic disorder and

unspecified tic disorder.

6.3 Symptoms of Motor Disorder

Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) starts in childhood and leads to

clumsiness and coordination disorders. Compared with other people of the same age,

children with this disease have impaired motor coordination. Symptoms included

clumsy, lactation and swallowing problems during the first 12 months of life, sitting

late, crawling and walking, difficulties with large motor skills such as jumping on one

foot, jumping and standing, difficulties with good motor skills, for example, writing,

cutting with scissors, tying shoelaces.

The term stereotypic movement disorder refers to a movement or movement

disorder characterized by repetitive movements, such as a head collision or body sway

for more than four weeks. As the level of stress or boredom increases, exercise tends
