3.0 Autism Spectrum Disorder

The neurodevelopmental disorder commonly called " autism " is titled autism

spectrum disorder in DSM - 5. This disorder incorporates a range of serious

disturbances in the ways that individuals interact with and communicate with others.

Patient with autism have certain patterns of interests and activities. The constellation

of diagnostic criteria associated with this disorder can persist for an individual ' s

entire life, depending on its severity, the individual can receive help to function

satisfactorily with treatment.

3.1 Prevalence

According to 2016 data, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

reported in 2020 that about 1 in 54 children in the United States was diagnosed with

autism spectrum disorder (ASD). 1 in 34 boys is determined to have autism and 1 of

144 girls identified with autism. Besides, boys are diagnosed with autism as four times

as likely as girls. Although autism can be reliably diagnosed as early as 2 years old,

most children are still diagnosed after 4 years old. 31% of children with ASD have an

intellectual disability (IQ [IQ] <70), 25% are in the critical range (IQ 71-85), and 44%

have an IQ that gathers from the average to above average (ie, IQ> 85) . Autism affects

all ethnic and socioeconomic groups. A small number of people are often diagnosed

late and rarely. Early intervention provides the best opportunity to support healthy

development and bring benefits throughout the life cycle.

Unfortunately, there is no medical test for autism.

3.2 Key Factor

According to World Health Organization (WHO), one in 160 children has an

autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ASD begin in childhood and tend to persist into

adolescence and adulthood. While some people with ASD can live independently,

others have severe disabilities and require life-long care and support. Evidence-based
