PRIZES AND A WARDS 99<br />

<strong>Oregon</strong> Dads Honors for Leadership. In recognition <strong>of</strong> outstanding leadership<br />

in high school, superior qualities <strong>of</strong> character and scholarship, and unusual<br />

promise for leadership in public affairs, the <strong>Oregon</strong> Dads award annually to selected<br />

high-school seniors certificates <strong>of</strong> Special Honors for Leadership. Recipients<br />

in need <strong>of</strong> financial assistance to continue their education at the <strong>University</strong><br />

may also be awarded scholarships.<br />

<strong>Oregon</strong> Dads Honors for Scholarship. The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong> Dads<br />

award annually certificates <strong>of</strong> Special Honors for Scholarship to a limited number<br />

<strong>of</strong> high-school graduates, in recognition <strong>of</strong> outstanding scholarship records in<br />

high school, superior qualities <strong>of</strong> character and leadership, and unusual promise for<br />

success in <strong>University</strong> studies. Recipients in need <strong>of</strong> financial assistance may also be<br />

awarded scholarships.<br />

Phi Beta Kappa Prize. This prize, consisting <strong>of</strong> books to the value <strong>of</strong> $25,<br />

is <strong>of</strong>fered annually by the Alpha <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong> chapter <strong>of</strong> Phi Beta Kappa. The<br />

award is made, on the basis <strong>of</strong> scholarship, to a student completing lower-division<br />

work. The books are chosen by the student in consultation with a committee <strong>of</strong><br />

the chapter.<br />

Liberal Arts<br />

Philo Sherman Bennett Prize. A prize <strong>of</strong> from $15 to $50, supported by<br />

a bequest from Philo Sherman Bennett <strong>of</strong> New Haven, Connecticut, is awarded<br />

for the best essay on the principles <strong>of</strong> free government.<br />

Julia Burgess Poetry Prize. The Julia Burgess Poetry Prize <strong>of</strong> $25 is<br />

awarded annually for the best original poem submitted by an undergraduate. Information<br />

concerning the award may be obtained from the head <strong>of</strong> the Department<br />

<strong>of</strong> English. The prize is endowed through a bequest from the late Julia Burgess,<br />

member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> faculty from 1907 until her death in 1942.<br />

L. S. and D. C. Cressman Prize in Anthropology. A $75 prize is <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

annually for the best essay in any subfield <strong>of</strong> anthropology submitted by a currently<br />

enrolled graduate student. It is expected that the essay be written especially<br />

for the prize competition and be suitable for publication, both in content and<br />

form. The prize is supported through funds provided by Dr. and Mrs. Luther S.<br />

Cressman.<br />

DeCou Prize in Mathematics. A prize <strong>of</strong> $100 is awarded annually to a<br />

junior or senior student for excellence in the field <strong>of</strong> mathematics. The prize is<br />

named in memory <strong>of</strong> Edgar E. DeCou, a member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> faculty from<br />

1902 until his death in 1947, and in memory <strong>of</strong> his son, Edgar J. DeCou.<br />

Delta Phi Alpha Award. A volume <strong>of</strong> German literature is awarded each<br />

year by the <strong>University</strong> chapter <strong>of</strong> Delta Phi Alpha, national German honor<br />

society, to the most outstanding student in German literature.<br />

Failing-Beekman Prizes. These prizes are awarded annually to members <strong>of</strong><br />

the senior class who have demonstrated during their <strong>University</strong> career the greatest<br />

ability in public speaking. The first prize <strong>of</strong> $100 is the gift <strong>of</strong> Henry Failing <strong>of</strong><br />

Portland; the second prize <strong>of</strong> $75 is the gift <strong>of</strong> C. C. Beekman <strong>of</strong> Jacksonville,<br />

<strong>Oregon</strong>.<br />

Lejeune W. Griffith Theater Award. A $25 award is presented annually to<br />

the outstanding senior who contributed most during his <strong>University</strong> career to the<br />

collective theater arts: acting, directing, playwriting, designing, and technical<br />

theater. The award is supported through gifts from Mrs. LeJeune W. Griffith,<br />

Class <strong>of</strong> '48.
