400 (G) level. Students planning to do graduate work should take two years <strong>of</strong><br />

German and two years <strong>of</strong> a second foreign language, preferably French or Spanish.<br />

To insure a broad liberal education, it is strongly recommended that the student<br />

limit his undergraduate work in anthropology to a maximum <strong>of</strong> 51 term hours.<br />

The department <strong>of</strong>fers graduate work leading to the Master <strong>of</strong> Arts and Doctor<br />

<strong>of</strong> Philosophy degrees. Graduate instruction includes work in the fields <strong>of</strong><br />

archaeology, ethnology, linguistics, and physical anthropology. To qualify for a<br />

master's degree, students must demonstrate a basic competence in all these fields.<br />

The carefully selected anthropological collections <strong>of</strong> the Museum <strong>of</strong> Natural<br />

History provide excellent material for class instruction, particularly in the culture<br />

<strong>of</strong> the American Indian.<br />

High-School Teaching. Students preparing for the teaching <strong>of</strong> social studies<br />

in the high schools may elect anthropology as a field <strong>of</strong> concentration. For the<br />

Anth 101, 102, 103. General Anthropology. 3 hours each term.<br />

Fall: man as a living organism; biological evolution; fossil man; winter:<br />

prehistoric cultures; spring: organization and functioning <strong>of</strong> culture. 2 lectures,<br />

1 discussion period.<br />

Anth 207,208,209. Introduction to Cultural Anthropology. 3 hours each term.<br />

The meaning <strong>of</strong> culture; its significance for human beings; its diverse forms<br />

and degrees <strong>of</strong> elaboration among different groups <strong>of</strong> men; its processes <strong>of</strong><br />

growth and expansion. 2 lectures; 1 discussion period. Smith.<br />

UPPER-DIvISION COURSES<br />

Anth 301, 302, 303. Primitive Society. 3 hours each term.<br />

Social relationships and organizations among primitive peoples, including<br />

kinship, fraternal, political, and religious forms and behaviors. Prerequisite:<br />

upper-division standing. Not open for credit to majors or to students who<br />

have taken Anth 207, 208, 209. Barclay, Dumond.<br />

Anth 314,315,316. Peoples <strong>of</strong> the World. 3 hours each term.<br />

Historical treatment <strong>of</strong> world culture areas, exclusive <strong>of</strong> Europe. Regional<br />

variations in culture, their backgrounds, and their significance in contemporary<br />

world affairs. Materials drawn from Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the<br />

Americas. Prerequisite to area courses. Prerequisite: upper-division standing.<br />

Anth 320, 321, 322. Physical Anthropology. 3 hours each term.<br />

Human physical development, racial differentiation, and racial distinctions.<br />

Fall: man's place among the Primates, fossil man, principles in human evolution;<br />

winter: morphological and genetic racial criteria, blood groups, factors<br />

in population change; spring: constitutional types, prehistoric and historic<br />

racial movements. Prerequisite: upper-division standing. Simonds.<br />
