Wood and steel building trusses, reinforced-concrete building construction;<br />

retaining walls, footings, and foundations for buildings. Prerequisite: AA<br />

AA 472, 473, 474. Theory <strong>of</strong> Structures III. (G) 4 hours each term.<br />

Continuous frames, rigid frames, and their effects on architectural design. A<br />

series <strong>of</strong> problems, presented in conj unction with fifth-year architectural design.<br />

Problems <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional ethics, business relations, <strong>of</strong>fice management, etc.<br />

Open only to fifth-year students.<br />

*AA 587. Architectural Design. 1 to 12 hours any term.<br />

Relation <strong>of</strong> architecture to the immediate environment and to the city-scape;<br />

analysis <strong>of</strong> determinant factors influencing planning and design. One-half <strong>of</strong><br />

the year is devoted to the solution <strong>of</strong> problems <strong>of</strong> extensive scale and broad<br />

scope. The terminal architectural design project is executed as a final halfyear<br />

problem under the direction <strong>of</strong> a thesis committee. Prerequisite: 15<br />

term hours in AA 487. Andrews, Bryan, Ferens, Gygax.<br />

Interior Architecture<br />

THE SCHOOL OFFERS a five-year curriculum in interior architecture leading<br />

to the degree <strong>of</strong> Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Interior Architecture. The lower-division program<br />

includes courses which provide acquaintance with the more elementary aspects<br />

<strong>of</strong> interior design, architectural design, and landscape design, organized to provide<br />

continuity with the pr<strong>of</strong>essional design work begun in the third year. The curriculum<br />

is planned to prepare students for the pr<strong>of</strong>essional practice <strong>of</strong> interior<br />

design.<br />

For students who do not intend to practice pr<strong>of</strong>essionally, the school also<br />

<strong>of</strong>fers a two-year upper-division program in interior architecture, following two<br />

years <strong>of</strong> lower-division work; this program leads to a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science or<br />

Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts degree.<br />
