partments in the supervising <strong>of</strong> Ph.D. programs for students who elect an emphasis<br />

on international affairs within their chosen disciplines.<br />

The Institute sponsors and encourages faculty research in international affairs<br />

and assists in providing opportunities for joint faculty and student research projects<br />

on campus and overseas. Research assistantships are available in the Institute;<br />

research and research training bases have been established in Chile, Colombia,<br />

and the Philippines.<br />

The Institute also conducts graduate seminars to provide opportunities for<br />

students and members <strong>of</strong> the faculty to share ideas and experiences with visiting<br />

lecturers, special consultants, and among themselves. In addition to its campus<br />

programs, the Institute arranges for advanced students opportunities for overseas<br />

study and for administrative experience on foreign projects.<br />

The Institute conducts the <strong>University</strong>'s annual Summer World Affairs Program<br />

and the program <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Oregon</strong> High School International Relations League,<br />

and assists in the student-sponsored World Affairs Week and the Model United<br />

Nations program.<br />

Center for Social Service Training and Research<br />

The Center for Social Service Training and Research administers programs<br />

<strong>of</strong> graduate instruction and research conducted by the <strong>University</strong> in the fields <strong>of</strong><br />

juvenile correction, rehabilitation counseling, and related areas.<br />

Rehabilitation Counseling. The program in rehabilitation counseling includes<br />

a two-year program <strong>of</strong> graduate work leading to a master's degree. The<br />

program, <strong>of</strong>fered through the cooperation <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Psychology and<br />

the School <strong>of</strong> Education, is designed to provide the student with a well-rounded<br />

background for pr<strong>of</strong>essional employment as a counselor in a state or private agency<br />

concerned with the problems <strong>of</strong> physically or mentally handicapped persons.<br />

Courses in psychology, education, and sociology are supplemented by study <strong>of</strong><br />

medical, legal, and other aspects <strong>of</strong> rehabilitation and by supervised experience<br />

in rehabilitation agencies. Financial assistance to full-time students in this program<br />

is available through traineeships provided by the U. S. Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Health, Education, and Welfare.<br />

Juvenile Correction. In the field <strong>of</strong> juvenile correction, the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers,<br />

through the Center for Social Service Training and Research, a two-year interdisciplinary<br />

program <strong>of</strong> graduate study, leading to the master's degree, to prepare<br />

students for pr<strong>of</strong>essional careers in the prevention and correction <strong>of</strong> juvenile<br />

delinquency in a variety <strong>of</strong> institutions and agencies. The research program includes<br />

studies <strong>of</strong> the etiology, prevention, and correction <strong>of</strong> juvenile behavioral<br />

problems.<br />
