include the subject-preparation requirements <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Oregon</strong> State Department<br />
<strong>of</strong> Education. These requirements are: for a basic certificate, granted after four<br />
years <strong>of</strong> college work, a basic norm-54 term hours, including 9 term hours<br />
in each <strong>of</strong> the following fields: American history, European or world history,<br />
geography, political science, economics, sociology or anthropology: for a standard<br />
certificate, granted after five years <strong>of</strong> college work, a standard norm-72 term<br />
hours, including the basic-norm requirement and including a total <strong>of</strong> 30 term<br />
hours in one <strong>of</strong> the fields listed for the basic norm, <strong>of</strong> which 3 term hours<br />
must be in research.<br />
These requirements will be mandatory after July 1, 1965. The minimum subject<br />
requirements for students who qualify for certification before this date are<br />
published in the 1962-63 <strong>University</strong> Catalog, page 265.<br />

THE COURSES <strong>of</strong>fered by the Department <strong>of</strong> Anthropology are planned to provide<br />
a broad and deep understanding <strong>of</strong> human nature and society for students<br />
in other fields, as well as integrated programs for majors in anthropology.<br />
A high-school student planning to major in anthropology is advised to take<br />
two years <strong>of</strong> high-school mathematics, preferably algebra. He should also come to<br />
the <strong>University</strong> with a sound background in English, so that he can read with understanding<br />
and express himself with clarity.<br />
Majors in anthropology are required to take the following lower-division<br />
courses: General Anthropology (Anth 101, 102, 103) or Introduction to Cultural<br />
Anthropology (Anth 207, 208, 209) ; General Psychology (Psy 201, 202); Psychology<br />
<strong>of</strong> Adj ustment (Psy 204) or Applied Psychology (Psy 205).<br />
At the upper-division level the following courses are required for majors:<br />
