Subject Preparation for High-School Teaching. For certification as a<br />
teacher <strong>of</strong> speech and drama in <strong>Oregon</strong> high schools, the student's program must<br />
include the subject-preparation requirements <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Oregon</strong> State Department <strong>of</strong><br />
Education. These requirements are: for a basic certificate, granted after four<br />
years <strong>of</strong> college work, a basic norm-18 term hours, including work in fundamentals<br />
<strong>of</strong> speech, speech arts (oral interpretation and fundamentals <strong>of</strong> acting),<br />
and speech science; for a standard norm, granted after five years <strong>of</strong> college work,<br />
a standard norm-30 term hours, including the basic-norm requirement and advanced<br />
work in fundamentals <strong>of</strong> speech, speech arts, and speech science.<br />
These requirements will be mandatory after July 1, 1965. The minimum subject<br />
requirements for students who qualify for certification before this date are<br />
published in the 1962-63 <strong>University</strong> Catalog, page 266.<br />

Committee on Discussion and Debate. The national <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> the Committee<br />
on Discussion and Debate <strong>of</strong> the National <strong>University</strong> Extension Association<br />
is located on the campus <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong>. The committee provides<br />
services to high-school debate leagues throughout the United States, including<br />
publication <strong>of</strong> the N.U.E.A. debate manual and related books, distribution <strong>of</strong><br />
discussion and debate materials, and maintenance <strong>of</strong> a forensics library.<br />

Sp 121, 122, 123. Fundamentals <strong>of</strong> Speech. 3 hours each term.<br />
Projects in extempore speaking. Sp 121, 122: emphasis on content, organization,<br />
performance, audience motivation, language, discussion, and parliamentary<br />
procedures. Sp 123 : emphasis on voice and diction, bodily action and<br />
reading from the printed page; attention to style in the preparation and presentation<br />
<strong>of</strong> speeches. Special section for Honors College students.<br />
Sp 221. Public Discussion. 2 hours winter or spring.<br />
Preparation <strong>of</strong> speeches for delivery before public audiences in conjunction<br />
with the <strong>University</strong>'s forensic program. Nobles.<br />
Sp 235. Public Speaking. 5 hours any term.<br />
Theory and practice <strong>of</strong> public speaking, with constructive criticism <strong>of</strong> performance.<br />
Particular attention to individual problems in speechmaking. Not<br />
<strong>of</strong>fered 1964-65.
