The program provides the student with a broad educational background, together<br />

with technical studies essential for the pr<strong>of</strong>essional practice <strong>of</strong> landscape<br />

architecture. Courses in the field are supplemented by courses in art, architectural<br />

design, construction, and city planning. Majors in landscape architecture work side<br />

by side with students <strong>of</strong> architecture and interior architecture, and have the benefit<br />

<strong>of</strong> design criticism from the entire faculty <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> Architecture and Allied<br />

Arts. Opportunities are provided for collaboration on design problems by landscape<br />

and architecture students. The instructional program includes field trips to acquaint<br />

students with outstanding examples <strong>of</strong> the design and construction <strong>of</strong> parks,<br />

cemeteries, airports, private properties and subdivisions, golf courses, and planned<br />

civic developments-and for study <strong>of</strong> the use <strong>of</strong> various plant materials under difficult<br />

conditions <strong>of</strong> climate, soil, and exposure.<br />

Students planning to major in landscape architecture may obtain necessary<br />

preparation in mathematics by completing courses in high-school mathematics<br />

through trigonometry.<br />

During the three upper-division years, the student must complete 6 term<br />

hours <strong>of</strong> work in sculpture or painting and 9 term hours in electives outside the<br />

school.<br />

The curriculum in landscape architecture is accredited by the American Society<br />

<strong>of</strong> Landscape Architects.<br />

Graduate work is <strong>of</strong>fered in landscape architecture, leading to the degree <strong>of</strong><br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Landscape Architecture, and in urban planning, leading to the degree <strong>of</strong><br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Urban Planning. The graduate program in urban planning is described<br />

below.<br />

Urban Planning. The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>f-ers a program <strong>of</strong> graduate study leading<br />

to the degree <strong>of</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Urban Planning, for students interested in pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

careers in city planning and in the planning <strong>of</strong> other areas affected by urbanization.<br />

The program usually requires two years for completion. It is interdisciplinary<br />

in approach, including studies in urban geography, land economics, state and local<br />

government, statistics, sociology, etc., in addition to studies in physical plaIming,
