ADVANCED PLACEMENT 123<br />

Journalism. (1) J 485, J 487; (2) senior thesis (J 403), 6 term hours; (3)<br />

GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.00 for all work during junior and senior years; (4) examination before<br />

faculty committee on thesis and pr<strong>of</strong>essional course work.<br />

Law. (1) Independent reading <strong>of</strong> four to six books about the law-history,<br />

biography, jurisprudence, fiction, etc.-selected with the approval <strong>of</strong> the faculty;<br />

(2) completion <strong>of</strong> law school work counted toward the B.A. degree with a GPA<br />

<strong>of</strong> 2.25 or higher.<br />

Mathematics. (1) Mth 204, 205, 206 (preferably honors section); (2) Mth<br />

412, 413, 414, Mth 431, 432, 433; (3) honors seminar or approved equivalent in<br />

junior or senior year.<br />

Medicine. (l) Three years <strong>of</strong> work in the Honors College; (2) completion<br />

<strong>of</strong> the first-year pr<strong>of</strong>essional program in medicine with a scholastic rank in the<br />

upper half <strong>of</strong> his class.<br />

Music. (l) 9 term hours <strong>of</strong> independent study <strong>of</strong> a musical period, style,<br />

genre, composer, etc.; (2) honors essay in spring term <strong>of</strong> senior year.<br />

Philosophy. (l) PhI 301, 302, 303 before senior year; (2) senior honors<br />

essay, following intensive study <strong>of</strong> some aspect <strong>of</strong> philosophy on a tutorial basis,<br />

normally for 9 term hours <strong>of</strong> credit.<br />

Physics. Maximum <strong>of</strong> 18 term hours <strong>of</strong> credit in independent study (research,<br />

reading and conference, thesis).<br />

Political Science. (1) Fall term <strong>of</strong> senior year, honors seminar, 3 term hours;<br />

(2) winter term <strong>of</strong> senior year, reading and conference, 3 term hours; (3) spring<br />

term <strong>of</strong> senior year, honors essay, 3 term hours.<br />

Psychology. (1) Honors seminar; (2) honors thesis. (It is strongly recommended<br />

that honors students take Mth 425, 426 or Mth 441, 442, 443 in the junior<br />

year.<br />

Sociology. (1) Soc 301, Soc 302, Soc 311, Soc 334; (2) any two <strong>of</strong> the following:<br />

Soc 443, Soc 449, Soc 460, Soc 470; (3) minimum <strong>of</strong> 12 term hours in<br />

a substantive area <strong>of</strong> sociology; (4) examination covering twenty major works<br />

in the field <strong>of</strong> sociology; (5) honors thesis involving sociological analysis (maximum<br />

credit, 9 term hours).<br />

Speech. (1) Honors seminar during junior year; (2) honors readings, fall<br />

term <strong>of</strong> senior year; (3) honors thesis, prepared during winter and spring terms<br />

<strong>of</strong> senior year.<br />

Advanced Placement Program<br />

Students who complete college-level work in high school under the Advanced<br />

Placement Program sponsored by the College Entrance Examination<br />

Board and who receive satisfactory grades in examinations administered by<br />

the Board may, on admission to the <strong>University</strong>, be granted credit toward a bachelor's<br />

degree in comparable <strong>University</strong> courses. The <strong>University</strong>'s participation in<br />

this program is supervised by the Honors College.<br />

The fields included in the Advanced Placement Program are: English composition<br />

and literature, American history, European history, biology, chemistry,<br />

physics, mathematics, French, German, Spanish, and Latin.<br />

In the field <strong>of</strong> mathematics, the <strong>University</strong> sponsors a special advanced placement<br />

program which differs in some respects from the College Board program;<br />

students completing this program may also receive credit toward a degree if they<br />

receive superior grades in examinations administered by the Department <strong>of</strong> Mathematics.
