assistance to get the maximum benefit from their education. The scholarships are<br />
supported through a bequest from the late William W. Stout <strong>of</strong> California.<br />
C. P. Tillman Scholarship. The C. P. Tillman Scholarship, about $100, is<br />
awarded annually to a <strong>University</strong> freshman residing in the Eugene-Springfield<br />
area, on the basis <strong>of</strong> ability and financial need. The scholarship is supported by an<br />
endowment bequethed to the <strong>University</strong> by the late C. P. Tillman <strong>of</strong> Eugene,<br />
<strong>Oregon</strong>.<br />
Max Tucker Scholarships. Two or three $1,000 scholarships are awarded<br />
annually to <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong> students from a fund established by the will <strong>of</strong><br />
the late Max Tucker <strong>of</strong> Lebanon, <strong>Oregon</strong>. In the selection <strong>of</strong> Tucker scholars,<br />
special consideration is given to graduates <strong>of</strong> Lebanon High School.<br />
Zimmerman Scholarships. The Joseph P. and Eva Zimmerman scholarships,<br />
<strong>of</strong> varying amounts, are awarded to seniors and graduate students. The scholarships<br />
are supported through a bequest <strong>of</strong> the late Miss Lois Zimmerman, Class<br />
<strong>of</strong> '28, and is named in memory <strong>of</strong> her father and mother.<br />
Zonta Scholarship. The Eugene chapter <strong>of</strong> Zonta International awards a fee<br />
scholarship to a woman student, usual1y a junior or a senior.<br />
Liberal Arts<br />
Colonial Dames <strong>of</strong> America Scholarship. A $300 scholarship, supported<br />
by the Colonial Dames <strong>of</strong> America, is awarded annual1y to a student who intends<br />
to teach American history and who is in need <strong>of</strong> financial assistance.<br />
Thomas Condon Fellowship in Paleontology. The Thomas Condon Fellowship<br />
is awarded by the Department <strong>of</strong> Geology as an aid to graduate study in<br />
the field <strong>of</strong> paleontology. The fel10wship is endowed through a bequest from<br />
the late Mrs. El1en Condon McCornack, and is named in memory <strong>of</strong> her father,<br />
Dr. Thomas Condon, pioneer <strong>Oregon</strong> geologist and a member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong><br />
faculty from 1876 until his death in 1906.<br />
Judy Ellefson Speech Scholarship. A $100 scholarship is awarded annually<br />
to an upper-division student whose primary interest is in the field <strong>of</strong> speech and<br />
drama. The scholarship is named in memory <strong>of</strong> the late Miss Judy Ellefson, Class<br />
<strong>of</strong> '55, and is supported by her family and friends.<br />
Pacific Resins and Chemicals Scholarship. A $300 scholarship, supported<br />
by Pacific Resins and Chemicals, Inc., is awarded annually to a freshman student<br />
who is planning a career in chemistry or in the teaching <strong>of</strong> science or mathematics<br />
in the secondary schools.<br />
F. G. G. Schmidt Fellowship in German. A $250 fel1owship, supported by a<br />
gift from the late Dr. F. G. G. Schmidt, a member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> faculty from<br />
1897 until his death in 1945, is awarded annually to a worthy graduate student<br />
majoring in German.<br />
Stafford Scholarships in Chemistry. Two $500 scholarships are awarded annually<br />
to junior or senior majors in chemistry from funds provided by the Crown<br />
Zellerbach Foundation. The donor stipulates: (l) that, in the selection <strong>of</strong> scholars,<br />
no discrimination be made on the basis <strong>of</strong> race, creed, sex, or country <strong>of</strong> origin;<br />
(2) that candidates must be citizens <strong>of</strong> the United States; (3) that financial need<br />
should not be a primary consideration in selection; (4) that scholarships shal1 not<br />
be awarded to students who have previously held scholarships from the Crown<br />
Zellerbach Foundation. The awards are named in honor <strong>of</strong> Orin Fletcher Stafford,<br />
member <strong>of</strong> the faculty <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Chemistry from 1902 until<br />
his death in 1941.
