and transfer to <strong>Oregon</strong> State <strong>University</strong> at the beginning <strong>of</strong> the junior year, with<br />
out loss <strong>of</strong> credit and with fundamental requirements for upper-division standing<br />
fully met.<br />
The foods and clothing laboratories <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Borne Economics<br />
are designed and equipped in accordance with the best modern standards for instruction<br />
in these fields.<br />
Subject Preparation for High-School Teaching. For certification as a<br />
teacher <strong>of</strong> home economics in <strong>Oregon</strong> high schools, the student's program must<br />
include the subject-preparation requirements <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Oregon</strong> State Department <strong>of</strong><br />
Education. The requirements are: for a basic certificate, granted after four years<br />
<strong>of</strong> college work, a basic norm-36 term hours in home economics, including work<br />
in child development, clothing, family relationships, foods and nutrition, housing<br />
and home furnishings, and home management; for a standard norm, granted after<br />
five years <strong>of</strong> college work, a standard nOrlin-54 term hours in home economics,<br />
including the basic-norm requirement.<br />
The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers the work required for the basic norm; it does not,<br />
however, <strong>of</strong>fer the additional work required for the standard norm.<br />
The requirements stated above will be mandatory after July 1, 1965. The<br />
minimum subject requirements for students who qualify for certification before<br />
this date are published in the 1962-63 <strong>University</strong> Catalog, page 263.<br />
LOWER-DIVISION COURSES<br />
BEc 121, 122, 123. Clothing Construction. 2 hours each term.<br />
Principles <strong>of</strong> clothing construction. BEc 121 : basic skills in use <strong>of</strong> patterns,<br />
fabrics, and equipment. BEc 122: selection, management, and construction,<br />
using silk and manmade fibers. BEc 123: planning and construction <strong>of</strong> a lined<br />
wool suit or coat. It is recommended that the sequence be preceded by BEc<br />
124, 125, 126 or taken concurrently.<br />
BEc 124, 125, 126. Clothing Selection. 1 hour any term.<br />
Aesthetic and economic factors in the selection <strong>of</strong> clothing. BEc 124 : aesthetic<br />
principles <strong>of</strong> line, color and texture. BEc 125: expression <strong>of</strong> individuality<br />
through clothing. BEc 126: problems <strong>of</strong> consumer buying <strong>of</strong> clothing;<br />
clothing expenditures <strong>of</strong> college students and the family.<br />
BEc 125. Textiles. 2 hours any term.<br />
Designed to develop a basic consumer understanding <strong>of</strong> the characteristics <strong>of</strong><br />
fibers and fabrics; selection, purchase, and care <strong>of</strong> fabrics and household<br />
linens. Suggested parallel for BEc 111.<br />
BEc 226,227,228. Foods. 3 hours each term..<br />
Scientific approach to food preparation; nutritional, managerial, and aesthetic<br />
aspects <strong>of</strong> meal planning. 2 recitations; 2 two-hour laboratory periods.<br />
BEc 222. Family Relationships. 2 hours any term.<br />
Values and goals <strong>of</strong> modern family life; family roles <strong>of</strong> men and women;<br />
choice <strong>of</strong> a marriage partner; adjustment to family life.<br />
BEc 225. Nutrition. 2 hours any term.<br />
Scientific study <strong>of</strong> foods; choice <strong>of</strong> foods for the maintenance <strong>of</strong> health;<br />
common nutritional problems; evaluation <strong>of</strong> nutritional information provided<br />
in the mass media.<br />
BEc 250. Camp Cookery. 1 hour any term.<br />
Fundamental principles <strong>of</strong> cookery applied to simple meals in home and camp.<br />
