A candidate for the Ph.D. degree in economics must select four fields for<br />

concentrated study, including economic theory, and must pass a written comprehensive<br />

examination in each field and an oral examination covering the four fields.<br />

One field may be in another department or school <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>. A working<br />

knowledge <strong>of</strong> statistics is required for admission to candidacy for the degree.<br />

A candidate for the Ph.D. degree in another discipline may present a field <strong>of</strong><br />

economics as a cognate subject, provided he has had proper preparation, including<br />

a background in economic theory, to support the field <strong>of</strong> special interest.<br />

LOWER-DIVISION COURSES<br />

Ec 201, 202, 203. Principles <strong>of</strong> Economics. 3 hours each term.<br />

Principles that underlie production, exchange, distribution, etc. Special section<br />

for Honors College students. Prerequisite: sophomore standing. Allen,<br />

UPPER-DIVISION COURSES<br />

Ec 318. Money and Banking. 3 hours fall.<br />

Operations <strong>of</strong> commercial banks, the Federal Reserve System, and the Treasury<br />

that affect the United States monetary system. Prerequisite: Ec 201, 202,<br />

203 or consent <strong>of</strong> instructor. Grove.<br />

Ec 319. Public Finance. 3 hours winter.<br />

Principles and problems <strong>of</strong> government financing. Expenditures, revenues,<br />

debt, and financial administration. Prerequisite: Ec 201, 202, 203 or consent<br />

<strong>of</strong> instructor. Grove.<br />

Ec 320. International Finance. 3 hours spring.<br />

The nature <strong>of</strong> foreign-exchange markets; techniques <strong>of</strong> international payments;<br />

exchange rates and their determination; problems <strong>of</strong> an international<br />

monetary standard; international banking facilities; economic aspects <strong>of</strong><br />

major international organizations. Prerequisite: Ec 201, 202, 203 or consent<br />

<strong>of</strong> instructor. Grove.<br />

Ec 375, 376, 377. Economic Theory. 3 hours each term.<br />

Systematic study <strong>of</strong> the concepts and methods <strong>of</strong> current economic analysis.<br />

with special atttention to the neoclassical school. Includes work in the fields <strong>of</strong><br />

value and distribution, fluctuations, employment, etc. Required <strong>of</strong> all majors.<br />

Analysis <strong>of</strong> the nature <strong>of</strong> money, effects <strong>of</strong> changes in the money supply,<br />

monetary controls used by the Federal Reserve System and the Treasury,<br />

international repercussions <strong>of</strong> domestic monetary policies, international banking<br />

agencies; critique <strong>of</strong> various monetary policies. Prerequisite: Ec 201,<br />
