Admission. For admission to the master's program, the student must satisfy<br />

the general requirements for admission to the Graduate School (see pages<br />

105-107). Admission to 500 courses may, however, be restricted to students with a<br />

grade-point average <strong>of</strong> 2.75 or higher. Formal admission to candidacy for a master's<br />

degree is granted only after a qualifying examination following the student's<br />

first term <strong>of</strong> graduate study.<br />

Core Programs. The first year <strong>of</strong> the master's program includes a series <strong>of</strong><br />

core seminars and two terms <strong>of</strong> work in Principles <strong>of</strong> Economics, planned especially<br />

for students whose undergraduate studies have been in fields other than<br />

business administration. For these students, the first-year core program is required;<br />

all or part <strong>of</strong> the requirement may be waived for students who have<br />

had equivalent instruction as undergraduates at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong> or another<br />

institution. The first-year core requirement is as follows:<br />

<strong>of</strong> functional areas <strong>of</strong> business in the application <strong>of</strong> management principles. The<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Business Administration. The program leading to the M.B.A.<br />

degree emphasizes the development <strong>of</strong> breadth <strong>of</strong> understanding <strong>of</strong> business problems<br />

and <strong>of</strong> general management skills; the program is especially adapted to the<br />

needs <strong>of</strong> students who have earned their bachelor's degree in the social sciences,<br />

humanities, sciences, or engineering.<br />

The requirements are: (I) completion <strong>of</strong> the first-year core program or<br />

equivalent; (2) completion <strong>of</strong> the full second-year core program; (3) a maximum<br />

<strong>of</strong> 18 term hours in a field <strong>of</strong> business specialization. A thesis is not required; if<br />

the student elects to submit a thesis, thesis credit (9 term hours) is counted as<br />

part <strong>of</strong> the 18-hour maximum in his field <strong>of</strong> specialization.<br />

All candidates for the M.B.A. degree are required to take a final written<br />

comprehensive examination, covering (I) the second-year core program and (2)<br />

the field <strong>of</strong> specialization.<br />

Portland M.B.A. Program. Candidates for the M.B.A. degree may complete<br />

the 18-hour second-year core program in the Portland Continuation Center <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>Oregon</strong> State System <strong>of</strong> Higher Education. They may also satisfy in Portland<br />

the 18-hour specialization requirement, in fields in which faculty and library resources<br />

are available. Candidates who complete their course work in Portland<br />

are required to write a thesis, in consultation with advisers on the Eugene campus.<br />

Instruction providing the equivalent <strong>of</strong> the first-year core program is also<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered in the Portland Center.<br />
