DEGREES 69<br />

(a) For freshmen who receive low ratings on a placement examination<br />

given to all entering students: Corrective English (Wr 10), <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

on the campus through the Division <strong>of</strong> Continuing Education <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>Oregon</strong> State System <strong>of</strong> Higher Education (students pay a special<br />

fee for this remedial instruction).<br />

(b) For all students: English Composition (Wr 121, 122, 123), 9 term<br />

hours. (With the consent <strong>of</strong> the head <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> English,<br />

all or part <strong>of</strong> this requirement may be waived for students who demonstrate<br />

superior ability in writing.)<br />

(2) Physical education: 5 terms in activity courses unless excused.* (One or<br />

more terms <strong>of</strong> this requirement may be waived on the basis <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>iciency<br />

examinations.)<br />

(3) Health education: HE 150 or HE 250 for men; HE 250 for women.<br />

(This requirement may be waived on the basis <strong>of</strong> a pr<strong>of</strong>iciency examination.)<br />

(4) Group requirement: four sequences in liberal arts courses numbered from<br />

100 to 120 or 200 to 220, including one sequence in each <strong>of</strong> three groups<br />

(arts and letters, social science, science), and a second sequence in any<br />

one <strong>of</strong> the three groups; for liberal arts majors, two additional sequences<br />

-see General Requirements, below, (3) (b). (The sequences satisfying<br />

the group requirements are listed on pages 71-72).<br />

(a) Each <strong>of</strong> the group sequences must total at least 9 term hours; each<br />

sequence in the science group must include laboratory work or total<br />

12 term hours.<br />

(b) At least one <strong>of</strong> the sequences must be numbered from 200 to 220.<br />

(c) At least one sequence in arts and letters must be in literature.<br />

(d) When two sequences are taken in social science or in science to<br />

satisfy the requirement, the sequences must be in different departments.<br />

(5) Grade-point average on completion <strong>of</strong> 93 hours <strong>of</strong> work: minimum, 2.00.<br />

General Requirements. The general requirements for a bachelor's degree<br />

'lre as follows:<br />

(1) Total credit:<br />

(a) For B.A., B.S.. RB.A., B.Ed., B.P.E., or B.Mus. degree: minimum,<br />

186 term hours.<br />

(b) For B.Arch., B.I.Arch., or B.L.A. degree: minimum, 220 term hours.<br />

(c) For LL.B. degree: minimum, 263 term hours.<br />

(2) Work in upper-division courses: minimum, 62 term hours.<br />

(3) Work in the major:<br />

(a) Minimum: 36 term hours, including at least 24 hours in upper-division<br />

courses.<br />

(b) For majors in the College <strong>of</strong> Liberal Arts: two sequences numbered<br />

from 100 to 120,200 to 220, or 300 to 310, in addition to the four sequences<br />

completed in satisfaction <strong>of</strong> the general lower-division group<br />

* Students who have completed six months <strong>of</strong> active military service in the Armed Forces <strong>of</strong><br />

the United States arc exempt from 3 terms <strong>of</strong> the physical-education requirement; to qualify for<br />

exemption, su.ch students must file <strong>of</strong>ficial documentary evidence <strong>of</strong> their service.
