PROFESSIONAL SCHOOLS<br />

The <strong>University</strong> is developing an elementary teacher education program that<br />

includes a period <strong>of</strong> internship. For information concerning this program, consult<br />

the Teacher Education Office, School <strong>of</strong> Education.<br />

Graduate Program. The graduate program in the field <strong>of</strong> elementary education<br />

is designed to provide continued study opportunities for pr<strong>of</strong>essional personnel<br />

in the field and, with the cooperation <strong>of</strong> other divisions <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>, to prepare<br />

master elementary-school teachers, elementary-school principals, supervisors,<br />

and directors, college teachers in the field <strong>of</strong> elementary education, and other<br />

specialists with responsibilities for the education <strong>of</strong> children. A brochure describing<br />

the graduate program in elementary education will be furnished on request to the<br />

School <strong>of</strong> Education.<br />

UPPER-DIVISION COURSES<br />

Ed 330. Field Experience. 1-2 hours.<br />

Direct experience with children <strong>of</strong> all ages, with selection <strong>of</strong> setting determined<br />

by student needs; work with hospitalized, mentally retarded, or delinquent<br />

children; September experience in a regular classroom during the first<br />

two weeks <strong>of</strong> the school year; leadership in recreational activities. Holboke.<br />

Ed 331. Introduction to Basic Classroom Procedures. 2 hours.<br />

The elementary teacher's role in the organization <strong>of</strong> time, space, and materials.<br />

To accompany directed observation and participation in elementary-school<br />

classroom activities, one-half day a week.<br />

Ed 332. Teaching Language Arts in the Elementary School. 3 hours.<br />

Language development from kindergarten through elementary school; emphasis<br />

on language as a means <strong>of</strong> thinking and communication. Curriculum,<br />

methods, materials, and evaluation in the teaching <strong>of</strong> speaking, listening, handwriting,<br />

spelling, correct language usage, etc. Carlson.<br />

Ed 333. Teaching Mathematics in the Elementary School. 3 hours.<br />

Arithmetic in the elementary-school program. Types <strong>of</strong> instruction, criteria<br />

for selection, placement, and organization <strong>of</strong> content. Prerequisite: Ed 315.<br />

Schminke.<br />

Ed 334. Teaching Social Studies and Science in the Elementary School. 5<br />

hours.<br />

Social studies and science in the elementary-school curriculum. Ways <strong>of</strong> developing<br />

basic concepts in human relationships and community living. Emphasis<br />

on the effective use <strong>of</strong> instructional media and on related problems <strong>of</strong> individual<br />

differences, cultivation <strong>of</strong> critical thinking, provision for growth and retention,<br />

and methods <strong>of</strong> evaluating results <strong>of</strong> instruction. Prerequisite: Ed 315.<br />

Ed 335. Teaching Reading in the Elementary School. 3 hours.<br />

The nature <strong>of</strong> the reading process; development <strong>of</strong> reading readiness, word<br />

recognition, study skills, vocabulary, comprehension, and reading interest.<br />

Methods <strong>of</strong> diagnosing difficulties; evaluation <strong>of</strong> programs; selection <strong>of</strong><br />

materials. Utsey.<br />
