Haycox Short-Story Prizes. The Ernest Haycox Memorial Short-Story<br />

Prizes, $100 and $50, are awarded annually for the best original short stories <strong>of</strong><br />

high literary quality submitted by undergraduate or graduate students. Information<br />

concerning this award may be obtained from the head <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong><br />

English. The prizes are supported through gifts from Mrs. Ernest Haycox in<br />

memory <strong>of</strong> her husband, a graduate <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> in the Class <strong>of</strong> '23.<br />

Jewett Prizes. These prizes, amounting to more than $200, are awarded annually<br />

in a series <strong>of</strong> public-speaking contests. Funds for the prizes were given to<br />

the <strong>University</strong> in memory <strong>of</strong> the late W. F. Jewett by his wife, Mrs. Mary Jewett.<br />

Marion F. McClain Award in Pacific Northwest History. A $500 award is<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered annually for a manuscript, written by a candidate for an advanced degree,<br />

which presents a significant contribution to knowledge <strong>of</strong> some phase <strong>of</strong> Pacific<br />

Northwest history. The award is named in honor <strong>of</strong> the late Marion F. McClain,<br />

Class <strong>of</strong> '06, who was manager <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> Cooperative Store from 1920 to<br />

1949. The award is supported through gifts from Mr. McClain's widow, Mrs.<br />

Mabel E. McClain, and the Cooperative Store.<br />

Pi Delta Phi Award. The <strong>University</strong> chapter <strong>of</strong> Pi Delta Phi, national French<br />

honor society, presents book prizes each year to the students who have made<br />

the greatest progress in undergraduate courses in French.<br />

George Rebec Prize in Philosophy. A $100 U.S. savings bond is awarded<br />

annually to the undergraduate student who submits the best essay on a philosophical<br />

topic. The prize is named in honor <strong>of</strong> Dr. George Rebec, member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong><br />

faculty from 1912 until his death in 1944.<br />

Sigma Delta Pi Awards. Book prizes are awarded each year by the <strong>University</strong><br />

Gamma chapter <strong>of</strong> Sigma Pi, national Spanish honor society, to students<br />

in advanced courses in Spanish who make the greatest progress during the year.<br />

Sigma Xi Graduate Research Prize. A prize <strong>of</strong> $25 is awarded annually by<br />

the <strong>Oregon</strong> chapter <strong>of</strong> Sigma Xi to the graduate student, working in one <strong>of</strong> the<br />

fields from which Sigma Xi selects its members, who submits the most outstanding<br />

piece <strong>of</strong> research.<br />

John Watson Vogan Spanish Essay Prizes. Prizes are awarded annually to<br />

the students presenting the best essays written in the Spanish language. The prizes<br />

are supported by an endowment established by Mrs. Grace Dawson Vogan <strong>of</strong><br />

Portland as a memorial to her husband, the late John Watson Vogan.<br />

Alicia Woods Poetry Prize. The Alicia Woods Poetry Prize <strong>of</strong> $15 is<br />

awarded annually for an outstanding original poem submitted by an undergraduate.<br />

Information concerning the award may be obtained from the head <strong>of</strong> the Department<br />

<strong>of</strong> English. The prize is supported from an endowment provided by friends<br />

<strong>of</strong> the late Alicia Woods, M.A., <strong>Oregon</strong>, 1958.<br />

Business Administration<br />

Beta Gamma Sigma Award. Each year the name <strong>of</strong> the sophomore student<br />

in business with the highest cumulative grade average is engraved on a plaque<br />

placed in the corridor <strong>of</strong> Commonwealth Hall by Beta Gamma Sigma, honorary<br />

business fraternity.<br />

Cornish Award in Marketing. An award <strong>of</strong> approximately $30 is presented<br />

annually to a junior student in business administration who is specializing in<br />

marketing and merchandising. The award is supported through a gift from Dr.<br />

Newell H. Cornish, pr<strong>of</strong>essor emeritus <strong>of</strong> business administration.
