for graduate assistants. Information conferning these programs may be<br />
obtained in the Graduate Office.<br />
Loans. Graduate students are eligible for loans from <strong>University</strong> loan funds<br />
(see pages 86-88) and from funds available under the National Defense Education<br />
Act <strong>of</strong> 1958.<br />
Graduate Work in Portland<br />
GRADUATE WORK leading to degrees from the <strong>University</strong> is <strong>of</strong>fered in Portland<br />
at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong> Medical School, the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong><br />
Dental School, and the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Nursing, and through<br />
the Division <strong>of</strong> Continuing Education <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Oregon</strong> State System <strong>of</strong> Higher<br />
Education.<br />
Medical School. The Medical School <strong>of</strong>fers graduate instruction leading to<br />
the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in the medical sciences (anatomy, bacteriology, biochemistry,<br />
medical psychology, pathology, pharmacology, and physiology). Graduate<br />
degrees earned at the Medical School are conferred by the <strong>University</strong>, on<br />
the recommendation <strong>of</strong> the faculty <strong>of</strong> the Medical School.<br />
Dental School. The Dental School <strong>of</strong>fers graduate work leading to the M.S.<br />
degree for students planning careers in dental education and research. Graduate<br />
major programs are <strong>of</strong>fered in the fields <strong>of</strong> anatomy, bacteriology, biochemistry,<br />
dental materials, oral pathology, orthodontics, pedodontics, pharmacology, and<br />
physiology. Graduate degrees earned at the Dental School are conferred by the<br />
<strong>University</strong>, on the recommendation <strong>of</strong> the faculty <strong>of</strong> the Dental School.<br />
School <strong>of</strong> Nursing. The School <strong>of</strong> Nursing <strong>of</strong>fers graduate work leading to<br />
the M.S. degree to prepare qualified pr<strong>of</strong>essional nurses for teaching positions<br />
in nursing. Graduate degrees earned in the School <strong>of</strong> Nursing are conferred by<br />
the <strong>University</strong>, on the recommendation <strong>of</strong> the faculty <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> Nursing.<br />
Portland Center. Part <strong>of</strong> the requirements for a master's degree from the<br />
<strong>University</strong> may be completed in the Portland Center <strong>of</strong> the Division <strong>of</strong> Continuing<br />
Education <strong>of</strong> the State System <strong>of</strong> Higher Education, in fields where adequate<br />
course <strong>of</strong>ferings are available for an integrated program.<br />
Research<br />
THE UNIVERSITY'S PROGRAM for the encouragement and support <strong>of</strong><br />
research by members <strong>of</strong> its faculty is administered through the Office <strong>of</strong> Scientific<br />
and Scholarly Research <strong>of</strong> the Graduate School, with advice and assistance from<br />
the faculty Research Committee. The Office <strong>of</strong> Scientific and Scholarly Research<br />
also serves as a coordinating agency in connection with <strong>University</strong> relations with<br />
foundations and government bodies which provide grants for research projects<br />
and supervises the programs <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> research divisions listed below.<br />
Research programs are also conducted through the Bureau <strong>of</strong> Municipal<br />
Research and Service, the Bureau <strong>of</strong> Business Research, and the Bureau <strong>of</strong><br />
Educational Research.<br />
