Writing<br />

The Department <strong>of</strong> English <strong>of</strong>fers required and elective courses in writing<br />

for all <strong>University</strong> students, to help them develop an ability to express themselves<br />

clearly in good English.<br />

Undergraduate English majors may plan a program emphasizing creative<br />

writing; students planning to emphasize creative writing are advised to complete<br />

at least 6 term hours <strong>of</strong> Wr 221, 222, 223. The department also <strong>of</strong>fers a graduate<br />

program in creative writing, leading to the M.A. or M.F.A. degree.<br />

English Composition (Wr 121, 122, 123) is a freshman sequence required <strong>of</strong><br />

all students in the <strong>University</strong>; each term's work must be taken in its sequential<br />

order. A student who demonstrates, through examination, that his writing ability<br />

meets the standard aimed at in English Composition may be excused from all or<br />

part <strong>of</strong> this required sequence. Students who do superior work in the first two<br />

terms <strong>of</strong> English Composition may be permitted to substitute Wr 224, Wr 226, or<br />

Wr 227 for Wr 123.<br />

Students whose placement examination indicates inadequate preparation in<br />

composition are required to take Corrective English (Wr 10), <strong>of</strong>fered through<br />

the Division <strong>of</strong> Continuing Education <strong>of</strong> the State System <strong>of</strong> Higher Education,<br />

before they are permitted to register for English Composition.<br />

LOWER-DIVISION COURSES<br />

Wr 97, 98. English as a Second Language. 3 hours each term.<br />

Composition for students whose native language is not English. Admission to<br />

Wr 98 only on recommendation <strong>of</strong> instructor. Atherly.<br />

Wr 121,122,123. English Composition. 3 hours any term.<br />

The fundamentals <strong>of</strong> English composition; frequent written themes. Special<br />

attention to correctness in fundamentals and to the organization <strong>of</strong> papers.<br />

Wr 221, 222, 223. Introduction to Imaginative Writing. 3 hours each term.<br />

An introductory sequence for students interested in the techniques <strong>of</strong> writing<br />

and in the development <strong>of</strong> a critical appreciation <strong>of</strong> the art <strong>of</strong> writing in its<br />

varied forms. Fall: general consideration <strong>of</strong> style; winter and spring: criticism,<br />

essentials <strong>of</strong> the short story, fundamentals <strong>of</strong> playwriting and poetry<br />

writing. Prerequisite: consent <strong>of</strong> instructor. Brown, Gibson, Karchmer,<br />

Wr 224. Business and Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Correspondence. 3 hours.<br />

Study <strong>of</strong> modern practices in business correspondence, primarily for students<br />

<strong>of</strong> business administration. Analysis and writing <strong>of</strong> the principal types <strong>of</strong><br />

correspondence. Prerequisite: Wr 121, 122, 123. Kittoe.<br />

Practice in various forms <strong>of</strong> expository writing.<br />

Wr 227. Scientific and Technical Writing. 3 hours.<br />
