Advancement to Candidacy. Advancement to candidacy for the D.Ed. degree<br />
is based on pr<strong>of</strong>iciency shown in comprehensive examinations and the recommendation<br />
<strong>of</strong> a doctoral adv:sory committee. The comprehensive examinations<br />
may be taken only after the student has (I) been admitted to the degree program,<br />
(2) completed approximately two-thirds <strong>of</strong> the total course work in his program,<br />
(3) obtained approval <strong>of</strong> his dissertation proposal by his advisory committee, and<br />
(4) received the consent <strong>of</strong> his adviser to take the examinations.<br />
AssistantshipS, Scholarships, Fellowships<br />
TEACHING AND RESEARCH assistantships, scholarships, and fellowships<br />
are awarded annually to graduates <strong>of</strong> accredited universities and colleges who<br />
have superior records in their undergraduate work. All persons holding these<br />
positions are expected to register in the Graduate School, and to become candidates<br />
for advanced degrees. Applications should be made before March 1.<br />
The <strong>University</strong> will welcome the submission <strong>of</strong> Graduate Record Examination<br />
scores by students applying for assistantships, scholarships, or fellowships.<br />

Princeton, N.J. or 4640 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles 27, Calif.<br />
Teaching Assistantships. A number <strong>of</strong> teaching assistantships are available<br />
to well-qualified graduate students in nearly all schools and departments. Stipends<br />
range from $1,800 to $2,400 for an academic year. Reappointments may be made<br />
for twelve months at proportionately higher stipends. Assistants are charged a<br />
special reduced fee <strong>of</strong> $32.00 per term. Teaching assistants are allowed to register<br />
for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 12 term hours <strong>of</strong> course work. Duties, which are limited to IS<br />
hours a week, consist <strong>of</strong> reading papers, supervising laboratory and quiz sections,<br />
etc. All graduate assistants are expected to be registered for at least 6<br />
term hours <strong>of</strong> work.<br />
Research Assistantships. A number <strong>of</strong> departments and schools employ<br />
research assistants. who work under the supervision <strong>of</strong> faculty members. Funds<br />
come from research grants and contracts. Stipends, fees, and enrollment limitations<br />
are the same as for teaching assistants; augmented service in the summer may<br />
substantially increase the annual stipend.<br />
State Scholarships. A limited number <strong>of</strong> scholarships covering a portion <strong>of</strong><br />
the regular fees charged by the <strong>University</strong> ($110 a term or $330 an academic year)<br />
are available to graduate students. All applicants, to be eligible, must be in need<br />
<strong>of</strong> financial assistance, and must show evidence <strong>of</strong> superior scholarship. Application<br />
should be made to the chairman, Committee on Scholarships and Grants in<br />
Aid, on <strong>of</strong>ficial blanks furnished by his <strong>of</strong>fice, and must be filed before March 1.<br />
Other Scholarships and Fellowships. Other scholarships and fellowships<br />
available to <strong>University</strong> graduate students are listed on pages 88-98. See especially<br />
Robert A. Booth Fellowship in Public Service, Coca Cola Scholarship, Thomas<br />
Condon Fellowship in Paleontology, Maud Densmore Music Fellowship, Haskins<br />
and Sells Teaching Fellowship in Accounting, Ion Lewis Scholarship in Architecture,<br />
F. G. G. Schmidt Fellowship in German, Weyerhaeuser Fellowship,<br />
Zimmerman Scholarships.<br />
Special Fellowship Programs. Graduate students at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong><br />
are eligible for fellowship awards granted by the National Science Foundation,<br />
the National Institutes <strong>of</strong> Health, the Woodrow 'Vilson Foundation, and<br />
other national agencies, and for fellowships awarded under the National Defense<br />
Education Act. The <strong>University</strong> participates in the National Science Foundation
