Advancement to Candidacy. Advancement to candidacy for the D.Ed. degree
is based on proficiency shown in comprehensive examinations and the recommendation
of a doctoral adv:sory committee. The comprehensive examinations
may be taken only after the student has (I) been admitted to the degree program,
(2) completed approximately two-thirds of the total course work in his program,
(3) obtained approval of his dissertation proposal by his advisory committee, and
(4) received the consent of his adviser to take the examinations.
AssistantshipS, Scholarships, Fellowships
TEACHING AND RESEARCH assistantships, scholarships, and fellowships
are awarded annually to graduates of accredited universities and colleges who
have superior records in their undergraduate work. All persons holding these
positions are expected to register in the Graduate School, and to become candidates
for advanced degrees. Applications should be made before March 1.
The University will welcome the submission of Graduate Record Examination
scores by students applying for assistantships, scholarships, or fellowships.

Teaching Assistantships. A number of teaching assistantships are available
to well-qualified graduate students in nearly all schools and departments. Stipends
range from $1,800 to $2,400 for an academic year. Reappointments may be made
for twelve months at proportionately higher stipends. Assistants are charged a
special reduced fee of $32.00 per term. Teaching assistants are allowed to register
for a maximum of 12 term hours of course work. Duties, which are limited to IS
hours a week, consist of reading papers, supervising laboratory and quiz sections,
etc. All graduate assistants are expected to be registered for at least 6
term hours of work.
Research Assistantships. A number of departments and schools employ
research assistants. who work under the supervision of faculty members. Funds
come from research grants and contracts. Stipends, fees, and enrollment limitations
are the same as for teaching assistants; augmented service in the summer may
substantially increase the annual stipend.
State Scholarships. A limited number of scholarships covering a portion of
the regular fees charged by the University ($110 a term or $330 an academic year)
are available to graduate students. All applicants, to be eligible, must be in need
of financial assistance, and must show evidence of superior scholarship. Application
should be made to the chairman, Committee on Scholarships and Grants in
Aid, on official blanks furnished by his office, and must be filed before March 1.
Other Scholarships and Fellowships. Other scholarships and fellowships
available to University graduate students are listed on pages 88-98. See especially

Special Fellowship Programs. Graduate students at the University of Oregon
are eligible for fellowship awards granted by the National Science Foundation,
the National Institutes of Health, the Woodrow 'Vilson Foundation, and
other national agencies, and for fellowships awarded under the National Defense
Education Act. The University participates in the National Science Foundation
