352 MILITARY AND AIR SCIENCE<br />

During the senior year, students programmed for Air Force pilot training<br />

take flight training at a local F.A.A.-approved civilian flying school. The purpose<br />

is to provide flight instruction <strong>of</strong> sufficient scope to qualify the student in the<br />

basic principles <strong>of</strong> flying in aircraft <strong>of</strong> 65-200 horsepower. Flight training includes<br />

solo flying by the students.<br />

The student qualifies for appointment as a commissioned reserve <strong>of</strong>ficer upon<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> the Advanced Course and the award <strong>of</strong> the baccalaureate degree.<br />

Students designated as distinguished military graduates may apply for appointment<br />

in the regular Air Force.<br />

LOWER-DIVISION COURSES<br />

AS 121. Air Science I. I hour fall.<br />

Organization for national security; introductory survey <strong>of</strong> current aerospace<br />

systems and craft and their characteristics, nuclear weapons, current propulsion<br />

systems, defensive, strategic, and tactical operations and counterinsurgency;<br />

leadership laboratory. 2 lectures; I hour leadership laboratory.<br />

AS 122. Air Science I. I hour winter.<br />

Space environment, orbits and trajectories, space vehicle systems, propulsion<br />

and power sources, instrumentation and communication, guidance and control,<br />

ground support systems, manned space flight, space operations, present<br />

and future developments in astronautics; contemporary military thought;<br />

leadership laboratory. 2 lectures; I hour leadership laboratory.<br />

AS 123. Air Science I. I hour spring.<br />

Leadership laboratory, I hour a week. Students enrolled must also take a<br />

course which satisfies the <strong>University</strong> group requirement (see pages 71-72),<br />

contributes to the pr<strong>of</strong>essional education <strong>of</strong> an Air Force <strong>of</strong>ficer, and carries<br />

2 or more term hours <strong>of</strong> credit.<br />

AS 221, 222. Air Science II. I hour each term, fall and winter.<br />

Leadership laboratory, I hour a week. Students enrolled must also take a<br />

course which satisfies the <strong>University</strong> group requirement (see pages 71-72),<br />

contributes to the pr<strong>of</strong>essional education <strong>of</strong> an Air Force <strong>of</strong>ficer, and carries<br />

2 or more term hours <strong>of</strong> credit.<br />

AS 223. Air Science II. I hour spring.<br />

Examination <strong>of</strong> the factors <strong>of</strong> aerospace power; modern applications <strong>of</strong> the<br />

principles <strong>of</strong> war; major ideological conflicts and defense <strong>of</strong> the free world.<br />

Introduction to the Air Force as a pr<strong>of</strong>ession, including pr<strong>of</strong>essional, personal,<br />

and educational aspects and opportunities as they apply to the young <strong>of</strong>ficer. 2<br />

lectures; 1 hour leadership laboratory.<br />

UPPER-DIVISION COURSES<br />

AS 311, 312, 313. Air Science III. 3 hours each term.<br />

Growth and development <strong>of</strong> aerospace power. Nature <strong>of</strong> war; development<br />

<strong>of</strong> air power in the United States; mission and organization <strong>of</strong> the Defense<br />

Department; Air Force concepts, doctrine, and employment; astronautics<br />

and space operations; the future development <strong>of</strong> aerospace power. The United<br />

States space programs; vehicles, systems, and problems in space exploration.<br />

3 class hours a week, 1 hour supervised research; I hour leadership<br />

laboratory.<br />

AS 411, 412, 413. Air Science IV. 2 hours each term.<br />

Weather and navigation; global relations <strong>of</strong> special interest to the Air Force<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficer, with emphasis on international relations and political geography;<br />

briefing for commissioned service. 2 lectures; I hoUl' leadership laboratory.
