THE DEPARTMENT OF MILITARY AND AIR SCIENCE is organized<br />
as a regular instructional division <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>. The department consists<br />
<strong>of</strong> a U. S. Army Instructor Group, Senior Division Reserve Officers' Training<br />
Corps, <strong>of</strong>fering instruction in military science, and a unit <strong>of</strong> the Air Force Reserve<br />
Officers' Training Corps, <strong>of</strong>fering instruction in air science.<br />
The mission <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Military and Air Science is to select and<br />
prepare students, through a program <strong>of</strong> instruction at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong>,<br />
to serve as commissioned <strong>of</strong>ficers in the United States Army or the United States<br />
Air Force, and to promote a better understanding <strong>of</strong> problems and policies <strong>of</strong><br />
national security. The program includes a two-year Basic Course and a two-year<br />
Advanced Course.<br />
Basic Course. The two-year Basic Course is a lower-division (freshman<br />
and sophomore) elective for men students who are under 23 years <strong>of</strong> age 011 first<br />
enrollment in the <strong>University</strong> and who are citizens <strong>of</strong> the United States. Students<br />
who are members <strong>of</strong> any <strong>of</strong> the reserve forces <strong>of</strong> the armed services or who have<br />
served on active duty in any <strong>of</strong> the armed services should check with the Department<br />
<strong>of</strong> rdilitary and Air Science concerning their eligibility to take the Basic<br />
and Advanced Courses. Applicants who wish to take the Basic and Advanced<br />
Courses must meet prescribed physical standards. A student accepted for enrollment<br />
in the Basic Course may be deferred from the draft; acceptance for enrollment<br />
in the Advanced Course c8.rl-ies automatic deferment.<br />
Advanced Course. The third and fourth years <strong>of</strong> miltary instruction, plus<br />
a summer training period, consitute the Advanced Course. Completion <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Advanced Course and academic requirements for graduation qualifies the student<br />
for appointment as a commissioned reserve <strong>of</strong>ficer.<br />
The summer training period is conducted at one <strong>of</strong> the regular installations<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Army or Air Force, and provides application <strong>of</strong> theory and familiarization<br />
with weapons, operations, organizational methods, and installational activities.<br />
The training is normally taken in the summer between the junior and senior<br />
years.<br />
Students enrolled in the Advanced Course are paid commutation in lieu <strong>of</strong><br />
subsistence for a total period not to exceed 595 days (the current rate is 90 cents<br />
a day). All payments are in addition to benefits received by veterans under the<br />
G.!. Bill <strong>of</strong> Rights. Advanced Course students are issued all required textbooks<br />
and uniforms. Students attending summer camp are rationed and quartered, are<br />
paid at the rate for enlisted men and airmen <strong>of</strong> the first grade, and receive a travel<br />
allowance <strong>of</strong> 5 cents a mile to and from camp.<br />
Admission to Advanced Course. Selection for enrollment in the Advanced<br />
Course is made from among applicants who meet certain minimum requirements.<br />
