first two years serves as an introduction to the main aspects <strong>of</strong> Western culture.<br />

In the last two years the more intensive study <strong>of</strong> the history <strong>of</strong> ideas, <strong>of</strong> literary<br />

movements, and <strong>of</strong> art forms serves to interpret modern trends in civilization.<br />

The maj or in general arts and letters leads to the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts degree.<br />

The following courses are required:<br />

Lower Division. (1) Literature (Honors College) (AL 101, 102, 103), or<br />

World Literature (Eng 107, 108, 109), or Survey <strong>of</strong> English Literature (Eng<br />

101, 102, 103), or Introduction to Literature (Eng 104, lOS, 106), or any sequence<br />

in foreign literature which has a prerequisite <strong>of</strong> two years (or equivalent) <strong>of</strong> foreign<br />

language in college. (2) Shakespeare (Eng 201, 202, 203), or Survey <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Visual Arts (AA 201, 201, 203), or Introduction to the History <strong>of</strong> Art (AA 204,<br />

205,206), or Introduction to Music and Its Literature (Mus 201, 202, 203). (3) At<br />

least one year <strong>of</strong> work in a foreign language beyond the first-year college level.<br />

(4) One <strong>of</strong> the following sequences in history: History <strong>of</strong> Western Civilization<br />

(Hst 101, 202, 103); History (Honors College) (Hst 107, 108, 109) ; English<br />

History (Hst 304, 305, 306).<br />

Upper Division. (1) Literature <strong>of</strong> the Ancient World (AL 304, 305, 306).<br />

(2) Dante and His Times (AL 477, 478, 479). (3) One <strong>of</strong> the following sequences<br />

in philosophy: History <strong>of</strong> Philosophy (Phi 301, 302, 303) ; Philosophy in Literature<br />

(Phi 431, 432). (4) History <strong>of</strong> Literary Criticism (Eng 414,415,416) or<br />

Aesthetics (Ph1441, 442, 443).<br />

In addition the student must complete four upper-division year sequences, each<br />

totaling at least 6 term hours, chosen from the major departments <strong>of</strong> the College<br />

<strong>of</strong> Liberal Arts; however, any two <strong>of</strong> the following ,equences may be elected for<br />

the partial satisfaction <strong>of</strong> this requirement: selected sequence in the history <strong>of</strong><br />

music; History <strong>of</strong> Painting (AA 346, 347, 348); Classical Art (AA 376),<br />

Romanesque and Gothic Art (AA 377), Italian Renaissance Art (AA 378),<br />

Basic Design (AA 295).<br />

The student's program <strong>of</strong> study should form an integrated whole. The electives<br />

should support the objectives <strong>of</strong> this program.<br />

LOWER·DIVISION COURSES<br />

AL 101, 102, 103. Literature (Honors College). 3 hours each term.<br />

Intensive study <strong>of</strong> selected works <strong>of</strong> Occidental literature. Combellack,<br />

Fischler, Gontrum, Moll, Strange, Wegelin.<br />

UPPER-DIVISION COURSES<br />

AL 301, 302, 303. Introduction to Japanese Literature. 3 hours each term.<br />

Fall: origins through Fuj iwara (twelfth century A.D.), with emphasis on the<br />

Tale <strong>of</strong> Genji; winter: mediaeval (Kamakura, Muromachi, Tokugawa) literature<br />

including drama (no, kabuki, bunraku) , haiku, and ukiyo writing;<br />

spring: literature since the Meiji Restoration (1868). All readings in English.<br />

Naff.<br />

AL 304,305,306. Literature <strong>of</strong> the Ancient World. 3 hours each term.<br />

Fall: Homer and the Greek epic; winter: the fifth century; spring: Latin<br />

poetry. Lectures and readings in English. Special attention to influence <strong>of</strong><br />

Greek and Latin writers on English literature. Combellack, Kim.<br />

AL 307, 308, 309. Introduction to Chinese Literature. 3 hours each term.<br />

Ancient Chinese literature and Confucian classics, with emphasis on poetry;<br />

later prose, poetry, and literary criticism; the development <strong>of</strong> drama and<br />

fiction. Readings and lectures in English. Palandri.
