School <strong>of</strong> Nursing<br />

THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON has <strong>of</strong>fered pr<strong>of</strong>essional instruction in<br />

nursing in Portland since 1919; a degree curriculum was established in 1926.<br />

Until 1932 the program in nursing was administered through the Portland Division<br />

<strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> Sociology and the Portland School <strong>of</strong> Social Work. When<br />

the social-work program was discontinued in 1932, instruction in nursing was<br />

transferred to the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong> Medical School, where it was <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

through the Department <strong>of</strong> Nursing Education. A graduate program, leading to<br />

the Master <strong>of</strong> Science degree, was established in 1955. In the fall <strong>of</strong> 1960, the<br />

department was reorganized as the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Nursing.<br />

The School <strong>of</strong> Nursing <strong>of</strong>fers two curricula which lead to the Bachelor <strong>of</strong><br />

Science degree-one for basic students with no previous preparation in nursing<br />

and one for registered nurses from diploma schools <strong>of</strong> nursing. These programs<br />

include preparation for beginning positions in public health nursing. An advanced<br />

curriculum leading to the Master <strong>of</strong> Science degree provides graduate study and<br />

advanced pr<strong>of</strong>essional education.<br />

The first year <strong>of</strong> the basic degree program is <strong>of</strong>fered on the Eugene campus<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong> (see pages 191-192) and by other accredited colleges<br />

and universities. The following three years <strong>of</strong> the basic program and all other<br />

nursing programs <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> Nursing are <strong>of</strong>fered on the campus <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong> Medical School in Portland. The School <strong>of</strong> Nursing utilizes the<br />

teaching resources <strong>of</strong> the hospitals and clinics <strong>of</strong> the Medical School, the Division<br />

<strong>of</strong> Continuing Education <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Oregon</strong> State System <strong>of</strong> Higher Education and<br />

Portland State College.<br />

Upper-division courses in public health nursing are <strong>of</strong>fered on the Eugene<br />

campus for senior students in the School <strong>of</strong> Nursing who are assigned to health<br />

agencies in Eugene for clinical experience.<br />

The programs <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> Nursing are accredited by the National<br />

Accreditation Service and the <strong>Oregon</strong> State Board <strong>of</strong> Nursing; the school is a<br />

member <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Baccalaureate and Higher Degree Programs <strong>of</strong> the<br />

National League for Nursing.<br />
