PIM 413. Wage and Salary Administration. (G) 3 hours.<br />
Systematic administration <strong>of</strong> wages and salaries as a means <strong>of</strong> motivation<br />
and control in the business enterprise. Job analysis, description, and specifications;<br />
job evaluation methods; community wage and salary surveys; establishing<br />
wage structures by job evaluation and wage levels by collective<br />
bargaining and other methods; principles and administration <strong>of</strong> wage incentive<br />
plans; evaluating the results <strong>of</strong> wage incentives; compensating clerical,<br />
supervisory, and management personnel. Prerequisite: PIM 412 or consent<br />

Major areas <strong>of</strong> personnel policy determination, with special emphasis on<br />
relations with organized employees at the enterprise level and within the enterprise.<br />
The impact <strong>of</strong> union practices on personnel policy and procedures in<br />
both unionized and nonunion enterprises. Prerequisite: PIM 412 or consent<br />

Evolving business systems in the changing American business environment<br />
since the colonial period; study <strong>of</strong> individual business firms and businessmen<br />
that illustrate these systems at critical times in their development; the results<br />
<strong>of</strong> decisions made at such junctures examined for their significance for business<br />

Typing <strong>of</strong> business letters, manuscripts, and various kinds <strong>of</strong> business forms;<br />

SS 126, 127, 128. Stenography. 3 hours each term.<br />
Gregg shorthand. SS 127, 128 devoted to the study <strong>of</strong> basic shorthand theory;<br />
SS 128 devoted to the development <strong>of</strong> speed in business letter dictation and<br />
transcription. Students must also take SS 122, 123, unless they have had<br />
equivalent training. Students who have had one year <strong>of</strong> high-school shorthand<br />
may not take SS 127 for credit. Section <strong>of</strong> SS 127 also <strong>of</strong>fered in Briefhand,<br />
a system <strong>of</strong> abbreviating longhand, using only alphabetical characters.<br />

Combination <strong>of</strong> shorthand, typewriting, and English into an employable skill ;<br />
emphasis on speed development in dictation and transcription; phrasing techniques,<br />
vocabulary development; efficient and correct procedures for the preparation<br />
<strong>of</strong> business letters, forms, manuscripts, and reports. Prerequisite:<br />
SS 128, SS 122, or equivalent. 4 hours recitation. Marnix.
