THE DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY offers an undergraduate program planned
to provide an understanding of the living world as a part of a liberal education, to
prepare the student for professional careers in industry, government, and secondary
education, and to provide preparation for graduate work leading to careers in
higher education, research, and the medical sciences.
Modern biology is a quantitative science; students planning to specialize in
biology should include in their high-school preparation as much mathematics as
possible, including at least algebra and geometry. Preparation in English is essential,
and work in French, German, chemistry, and physics is highly desirable.
The course requirements for majors are as follows: General Biology (Bi 101,
102, 103 or Bi 104, 105, 106) ;* General Chemistry (Ch 104, 105, 106, or Ch 204,
205, 206) ; Quantitative Analysis Laboratory (Ch 108, 109, or Ch 207,208,209) ;
mathematics through Mth 106; General Physics (Ph 201, 202,203, Ph 204, 205,
206) ; Organic Chemistry (Ch 334, 335, 336) ; Introduction to Genetics (Bi 422) ;
Cellular Physiology (Bi 311); 16 hours of upper-division work selected from
Vertebrate Zoology (Bi 351, 352, 253, Bi 355, 356), Invertebrate Zoology (Bi
361), Plant Morphology (Bi 332, 333), Systematic Botany (Bi 334), and including
at least one course in zoology and one course in botany; at least one additional
upper-division course in biology; two years of college-level French, German, or
Russian. Students who intend to go on for graduate work are urged to include
calculus in their programs. The foreign-language requirement will be waived for
students who enter medical or dental schools for the senior year of work towards
a departmental major; medical- or dental-school courses in anatomy and physiology
will be accepted in place of 8 hours of upper-division biology electives. Premedical
and predental students should make sure that their programs meet the
requirements of the schools they plan to enter, as well as those of the department.
Subject Preparation for High-School Teaching. For certification as a
teacher of biology in Oregon high schools, the student's program must include
the subject-preparation requirements of the Oregon State Department of Education.
These requirements are: for a basic certificate, granted after four years of
college work, a basic norm-36 term hours, including work in general biology,
anatomy, physiology, developmental biology, genetics, evolution, and ecology;
for a standard certificate, granted after five years of college work, a standard
norm-54 term hours, including the basic-norm requirement.
These requirements will be mandatory after July 1, 1%5. The minimum subject
requirements for students who qualify for certification before this date
are published in the 1962-63 University Catalog, page 260.
To receive the unqualified recommendation of the department, prospective
teachers should complete the major requirements summarized above. The
foreign-language and Mth 106 requirements will be waived for students who enter
student teaching in the senior year; these students should complete Introductory
College Mathematics (Mth 105) and Principles of Ecology (Bi 471), and may
substitute Essentials of Physics (Ph 101, 102, 103) for General Physics (Ph 201,
202, 203). Laboratory and Field Methods in Biology (Bi 494) satisfies the certification
requirement for Special Secondary Methods (Ed 408).
-I(- This requirement may be waived for students with superior high-school backgrounds, as
indicated by Advanced Placement Program record Or by special departmental examinations.
