<strong>of</strong> the campus. The Physical Education Building provides <strong>of</strong>fices, classrooms, study<br />

halls, and research laboratories for the school and gymnasium facilities for men.<br />

The building is planned especially for the pr<strong>of</strong>essional preparation in physical education,<br />

as well as for the recreational needs <strong>of</strong> students. The men's swimming pool<br />

is adjacent to the Physical Education Building.<br />

The women's gymnasium and the women's swimming pool are in Gerlinger<br />

Hall, west <strong>of</strong> the Physical Education Building across <strong>University</strong> Street. There are<br />

playing fields for women south and west <strong>of</strong> Gerlinger.<br />

Adjoining the Physical Education Building to the south is McArthur Court,<br />

basketball pavilion and athletic center <strong>of</strong> the Associated Students. McArthur<br />

Court seats over 10,000 spectators.<br />

Playing fields located east and south <strong>of</strong> the Physical Education Building provide<br />

excellent facilities for outdoor class instruction and for intramural and intercollegiate<br />

sports. Hayward Stadium, the Associated Students' athletic field, has<br />

seats for 23,000 spectators. North <strong>of</strong> Hayward Stadium are six standard concrete<br />

tennis courts. Eight additional courts are located south <strong>of</strong> the Education<br />

Building.<br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> Recreation Research and Service. The Institute <strong>of</strong> Recreation<br />

Research and Service, maintained by the School <strong>of</strong> Health, Physical Education,<br />

and Recreation in conjunction with its instructional program in recreation management,<br />

assists communities in the development <strong>of</strong> recreation, park, and youthservice<br />

resources, conducts research in various aspects <strong>of</strong> recreation development,<br />

and provides information on research findings and nation-wide community experience<br />

as a basis for the solution <strong>of</strong> recreation problems. The Institute sponsors<br />

conferences and workshops, and welcomes requests for information and assistance<br />

from public and private recreation agencies.<br />

High-School Teaching Norms<br />

For certification as a teacher <strong>of</strong> health and physical education in <strong>Oregon</strong><br />

high schools, the student's program must include subject preparation required by<br />

the <strong>Oregon</strong> State Department <strong>of</strong> Education. The requirements, which will be<br />

mandatory after July 1, 1965, are listed below. The minimum subject requirements<br />

for students who qualify for certification before this date are published in<br />

the 1962-63 <strong>University</strong> Catalog, pages 262, 264-265.<br />

Physical Education. For a basic certificate, granted after four years <strong>of</strong><br />

college work, the following basic lIor.11--35 term hours in physical education, including<br />

21 term hours in the following areas: human anatomy, human physiology,<br />

principles <strong>of</strong> physical education, physical-education curriculum, and organization<br />

and administration <strong>of</strong> physical education; and including 14 term hours in laboratory<br />

courses in the following areas: games, relays, stunts and self-testing activities,<br />

rhythms, gymnastics, fundamentals <strong>of</strong> body movement and mechanics, sports<br />

(individual, dual, and team), and aquatics. The following program is recommended<br />

for the satisfaction <strong>of</strong> this requirement:<br />
