ARCHITECTURE AND ALLIED ARTS 245<br />

A fifth year <strong>of</strong> preparation is required for standard secondary-school (junior<br />

and senior high school) certification in <strong>Oregon</strong>. Students working toward the completion<br />

<strong>of</strong> the fifth-year requirements are advised individually concerning the selection<br />

<strong>of</strong> courses. Students completing a properly planned fifth-year program<br />

may qualify for a master's degree.<br />

Minimum Requirements for Art Teaching. The minimum subject requirements<br />

for certification <strong>of</strong> a teacher <strong>of</strong> art in <strong>Oregon</strong> high schools, established by<br />

the <strong>Oregon</strong> State Department <strong>of</strong> Education, are as follows: for a basic certificate,<br />

granted after four years <strong>of</strong> college work, a basic norm-36 term hours <strong>of</strong> work<br />

in art, including work in each <strong>of</strong> the following: drawing and painting, sculpture,<br />

art history, crafts, and basic design (<strong>of</strong> the 36-hour total, 27 hours must be in<br />

studio work, including 6 hours in basic design) ; for a standard certificate, granted<br />

after five years <strong>of</strong> college work, a standard norm--57 term hours <strong>of</strong> work in art,<br />

including the basic-norm requirement.<br />

The norm requirements listed above will be mandatory after July I, 1965.<br />

The minimum subject requirements for students who qualify for certification before<br />

this date are published in the 1962-63 <strong>University</strong> Catalog, page 260.<br />

UPPER-DIVISION COURSES<br />

AA 311, 312. Art in the Elementary School. 2 hours each term.<br />

First term: introduction to the visual arts through laboratory experiences;<br />

design, drawing, painting, and other two-dimensional activities with materials<br />

appropriate for the primary- and intermediate-school child; lectures, group<br />

discussions, evaluations, studio work. Second term: continuation <strong>of</strong> art experiences<br />

for the elementary-school child, with emphasis on three-dimensional<br />

form. AA 311 prerequisite to AA 312.<br />

ArE 313. Art in the Elementary School. 3 hours.<br />

Critical examination <strong>of</strong> individual and group activities currently <strong>of</strong>fered in<br />

the elementary-school art program; lectures, curriculum design, evaluation<br />

<strong>of</strong> process and technique; literature in the field. Satisfies the <strong>Oregon</strong> State<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Education methods-course requirement. Prerequisite: AA 311,<br />

312 or consent <strong>of</strong> the instructor.<br />

ArE 314. Introduction to Art Education. 3 hours fall.<br />

A lecture-laboratory-seminar study <strong>of</strong> the growth and developmental stages <strong>of</strong><br />

children in relation to creative experience with visual-art materials. Required<br />

<strong>of</strong> all majors and students working for certification in secondary-school art<br />

Prerequisites: Ed 310; two years <strong>of</strong> lower-division work in art studio and<br />

art history courses. Ballinger.<br />

ArE 315. Art in the Junior High School. 3 hours winter.<br />

Critical evaluation <strong>of</strong> ideas, materials, and program content appropriate for<br />

art experiences <strong>of</strong> the pre-adolescent junior-high-school student. Offered concurrently<br />

with the first term <strong>of</strong> student teaching in junior high school. Lecture,<br />

laboratory course. Prerequisite: ArE 314. Ballinger, Gehring.<br />

ArE 316. Children's Art Laboratory. 2 hours.<br />

Work with children in a supervised art laboratory; designed for students preparing<br />

for art teaching at both the elementary and secondary levels. Burgner.<br />

ArE 401. Special Studies. Hours to be arranged.<br />

ArE 405. Reading and Conference. Hours to be arranged.<br />

ArE 407. Seminar. Hours to be arranged.<br />

Methods and Research in Secondary-School Art. Ballinger, Gehring.<br />

*Ed 416. Supervised Teaching: Junior High School. 5 to IS hours any term.<br />

*Ed 417. Supervised Teaching: Senior High School. 5 to IS hours any term.<br />

Student teaching experience in the public schools. One hour a day, five days<br />

a week; first term junior high school, second term senior high school. Maxi-<br />
