RESEARCH 119<br />

The Institute for Community Studies conducts and encourages basic research<br />

designed to explore the structure <strong>of</strong> American communities as social and political<br />

systems and to relate selected forms <strong>of</strong> behavior to such systems. Emphasis is<br />

placed on the policy-formulation processes in such areas as education, voluntary<br />

associations, local government, health, business associations, etc.<br />

The Institute provides facilities for individual research by members <strong>of</strong> the<br />

faculty and for cooperative projects, together with opportunities for continuing<br />

communication, criticism, and reports <strong>of</strong> progress by participating scholars. It also<br />

provides research training for graduate students in connection with Institute<br />

projects, with emphasis on the development <strong>of</strong> specific research designs as a basis<br />

for graduate dissertations.<br />

The Institute conducts seminars for the discussion <strong>of</strong> matters <strong>of</strong> common interest<br />

to members <strong>of</strong> its staff and graduate students, including research methods in<br />

community analysis, problems in design <strong>of</strong> cooperative research projects, and<br />

reports on research in progress.<br />

Institute for College Teaching<br />

WILLIAM C. JONES, Ph.D., Director <strong>of</strong> the Institute for College Teaching; Dean<br />

<strong>of</strong> Administration; Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Higher Education.<br />

The programs <strong>of</strong> the Institute for College Teaching include: (I) the conduct<br />

<strong>of</strong> research on various problems relating to college teaching, the improvement<br />

<strong>of</strong> the quality <strong>of</strong> college teaching, the preparation <strong>of</strong> college teachers, and<br />

related pr<strong>of</strong>essional problems <strong>of</strong> direct concern to college teachers; (2) the organization,<br />

supervision, and coordination <strong>of</strong> systematic programs <strong>of</strong> carefully<br />

supervised teaching experiences for students preparing for college teaching careel'S;<br />

(3) the preparation and presentation <strong>of</strong> courses and seminars dealing with<br />

the nature, structure, history, philosophy, and organization <strong>of</strong> institutions <strong>of</strong><br />

higher learning.<br />

The Institute, with the cooperation <strong>of</strong> members <strong>of</strong> the faculties <strong>of</strong> the several<br />

school and departments, <strong>of</strong>fers a seminar concerned with the broad problems <strong>of</strong><br />

higher education and college teaching:<br />
