Introduction to ceramic techniques and materials. Throwing, molding, and<br />

hand building. Surface decoration <strong>of</strong> two- and three-dimensional surfaces.<br />

Students participate in stacking, firing, and drawing the kilns. Open to nonmajors.<br />

AA 256. Weaving. 2 to 4 hours any term.<br />

Introduction to basic weaving techniques. The dressing, care, and manipulation<br />

<strong>of</strong> several types <strong>of</strong> looms. Experimentation with a wide variety <strong>of</strong> fibers.<br />

Production <strong>of</strong> textiles <strong>of</strong> original design on 4- and 8-harness looms. Nixon.<br />

AA 257. Jewelry and Meta1smithing. 2 to 4 hours any term.<br />

Introduction to the handworking <strong>of</strong> nonferrous metals-copper, brass, bronze,<br />

silver, gold; practical information about making jewelry and metal objectssoldering,<br />

stone setting, centrifuge casting, forging, raising. Nixon.<br />

AA 293. Elementary Sculpture. 2 to 4 hours any term.<br />

Introduction to materials. Elementary considerations <strong>of</strong> form; technical and<br />

compositional exercises in clay, plaster, wood, and stone. Sections for predental<br />

AA 393. Techniques <strong>of</strong> Sculpture. 2 to 6 hours any term.<br />

Modeling problems in portraiture, figure study, and group composition. Technical<br />

and aesthetic considerations <strong>of</strong> the several sculptural media. Buckner,<br />

<strong>of</strong> material, texture, and functional relationships. Body and glaze making;<br />

earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain. Kiln atmosphere and effects on body<br />

and glaze. Students assume responsibility for firing their own work. 30 term<br />

AA 456. Advanced Weaving. (G) 2 to 4 hours any term.<br />

Emphasis on creative work. Production <strong>of</strong> a wide variety <strong>of</strong> handwoven<br />

fabrics. Historical studies, fabric analysis, spinning, dyeing. 30 term hours<br />
