MATHEMATICS COURSES at the University are designed to provide the
training in rigorous thinking and analytical processes which is fundamental to a
liberal education; to provide basic mathematical and statistical training for students
in the social, biological, and physical sciences and in the professional schools;
to prepare prospective teachers of mathematics; and to provide advanced and
graduate work for students specializing in the field.
Preparation for Major Work. Students planning to major in mathematics at
the University should take high-school courses in algebra (at least one and onehalf
years) and plane geometry and, if possible, courses covering trigonometry,
solid geometry, and more advanced topics.
Majors usually begin University work in mathematics with Introductory
College Mathematics (Mth 104, 105, 106), Fundamentals of ;'viathematics (Honors
College) (Mth 107, 108, 109), or Analytic Geometry and Calculus (Mth 204, 205,
