THE DEPARTMENT OF SPEECH <strong>of</strong>fers major curricula leading to the<br />

Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts, Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science, Master <strong>of</strong> Arts, Master <strong>of</strong> Science, and<br />

Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy degrees, with opportunities for study in rhetoric and public<br />

address, radio and television broadcasting, speech and hearing therapy, and theater.<br />

Work in speech is also <strong>of</strong>fered for students majoring in other fields. For these<br />

students, the department directs its efforts toward two principal objectives: (l)<br />

the development <strong>of</strong> the ability to communicate thought and feeling; and (2) the<br />

improvement <strong>of</strong> powers <strong>of</strong> appreciation and evaluation in listening.<br />

Practical experience in the various phases <strong>of</strong> the departmental program is<br />

provided through the <strong>University</strong> Theater, the <strong>University</strong> Symposium and forensic<br />

activities, the <strong>University</strong> Broadcasting Studios, and the Speech and Hearing Clinic.<br />

In the planning <strong>of</strong> its major undergraduate programs, the Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Speech recognizes three principal objectives:<br />

(l) The achievement, by all <strong>of</strong> its major students, <strong>of</strong> a broad liberal education.<br />

The following major requirements relate to this objective:<br />

(a) To complement work in the department, the student must elect courses<br />

in other departments which are <strong>of</strong> substantial value in relation to his major program,<br />

including at least 18 term hours in upper-division courses in a single related<br />

field.<br />

(b) A maximum <strong>of</strong> 60 term hours <strong>of</strong> work in speech may be included in the<br />

student's program for a bachelor's degree.<br />

(2) Sufficient work in the several fields <strong>of</strong> speech instruction to provide an<br />

appreciation <strong>of</strong> the different areas <strong>of</strong> communication. The following major requirements<br />

relate to this objective:<br />

(a) The following basic courses are required <strong>of</strong> all majors: Fundamentals <strong>of</strong><br />

Speech (Sp 121, 122) ; Theory and Literature <strong>of</strong> Rhetoric (Sp 301) ; Advanced<br />

Interpretation (Sp 311) ; Speech Science (Sp 371) ; Radio and Television and<br />

the Public (Sp 448) ; History <strong>of</strong> the Theater (Sp 464).<br />

(b) A minimum <strong>of</strong> 40 term hours in speech courses is required <strong>of</strong> all majors,<br />

at least 25 <strong>of</strong> which must be upper-division courses.<br />

(c) A minimum <strong>of</strong> 9 term hours <strong>of</strong> work in general psychology or in history<br />

is required <strong>of</strong> all majors.<br />

(3) The mastery <strong>of</strong> at least one <strong>of</strong> the four following fields: rhetoric and<br />

public address, radio and television broadcasting, speech and hearing therapy,<br />

theater. The minimum requirements in each <strong>of</strong> the four fields are as follows:<br />

• On leave <strong>of</strong> absence, fall term, 1963·64.<br />
