Evaluation <strong>of</strong> approaches to the problem <strong>of</strong> cultural changes; analysis <strong>of</strong> invention<br />

change; mechanics <strong>of</strong> cultural growth; application <strong>of</strong> techniques for inducing<br />

A comparatiye presentation and analysis <strong>of</strong> the differing world views <strong>of</strong> various<br />

primitive peoples. The basic premises and tenets revealed by an ethnic<br />

Study <strong>of</strong> case material in which anthropological assumptions, theories, and<br />

techniques have been applied to effect desired changes in intergroup relations.<br />

Problems <strong>of</strong> cross-cultural communication, conflict, and adjustment. Prerequisite:<br />

9 hours in anthropology or senior standing in social science.<br />

Survey <strong>of</strong> present policies and techniques <strong>of</strong> native administration; application<br />

<strong>of</strong> anthropological facts and theory to the solution <strong>of</strong> practical problems;<br />

the impact <strong>of</strong> external demands on native cultures; satisfaction <strong>of</strong> social,<br />

economic, and psychological needs. Principal areas studied are Oceania and<br />

Africa, with some attention to parts <strong>of</strong> North America and Asia. Prerequisite:<br />

Culture as patterned interaction among individuals, groups, and environments;<br />

interaction through message networks, including verbal and nonverbal<br />

<strong>of</strong> individuals; how men developed these systems and how this achievement<br />
