110 GRADUATE SCHOOL<br />
The requirements for an M.A. or M.S. degree in interdisciplinary studies are<br />
the same as those for the departmental master's degree, except those requirements<br />
relating to major or minor fields.<br />
The program is supervised by the Committee on Interdisciplinary Studies, <strong>of</strong><br />
which Dr. Lloyd R. Sorenson, associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> history, is chairman.<br />
Graduate Program for Teachers. A special program <strong>of</strong> graduate study for<br />
students working toward the satisfaction <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Oregon</strong> state requirement <strong>of</strong> a<br />
fifth year <strong>of</strong> college work for final high-school teacher certification is <strong>of</strong>fered as<br />
one <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>'s programs <strong>of</strong> interdisciplinary studies. Enrollment is open<br />
to any person eligible for admission to the Graduate School; the student must,<br />
however, have a reasonable background <strong>of</strong> undergraduate study in the fields in<br />
which he proposes to work, and must complete prerequisites for specific courses.<br />
The requirements for a master's degree in the program for teachers are as follows:<br />
(I) A total <strong>of</strong> between 45 and 51 term hours in graduate courses, distributed<br />
in accordance with (a) and (b) below:<br />
(a) A total <strong>of</strong> 36 term hours in subject fields (work in liberal arts departments<br />
or pr<strong>of</strong>essional schools other than education), distributed in accordance<br />
with one <strong>of</strong> the following options:<br />
Option I. Between 15 and 21 term hours in each <strong>of</strong> two subject fields.<br />
Option 2. A minimum <strong>of</strong> 36 term hours in one <strong>of</strong> the following fields: art, biology,<br />
business administration, English, French, geography, history, health<br />
and physical education, mathematics, music, Spanish.<br />
Option 3. A minimum <strong>of</strong> 36 term hours in the composite field <strong>of</strong> social studies<br />
or the composite field <strong>of</strong> science. A program in social studies may include<br />
work in the fields <strong>of</strong> anthropology, economics, geography, history, political<br />
science, psychology, and sociology. A program in science may include work<br />
in the fields <strong>of</strong> biology, chemistry, geology, mathematics, and physics.<br />
In each <strong>of</strong> the options listed above, at least 6 term hours <strong>of</strong> work must be taken<br />
in 500 courses. The student's program must be planned to provide well-rounded<br />
knowledge, and must not be made up <strong>of</strong> scattered, unrelated courses.<br />
For Options 1 or 2, 18 term hours in each <strong>of</strong> the subject fields involved must be<br />
presented as an undergraduate prerequisite. For Option 3, the prerequisite is 36<br />
term hours in the composite field involved.<br />
(b) Between 9 and 15 term hours in graduate courses in the field <strong>of</strong> education,<br />
the number <strong>of</strong> hours to be determined on the basis <strong>of</strong> the amount <strong>of</strong> work<br />
in education completed by the student as an undergraduate.<br />
(2) Satisfaction <strong>of</strong> the regular requirements <strong>of</strong> the Graduate School, except<br />
that no thesis is required. The combined total <strong>of</strong> work transferred from other<br />
accredited institutions and work done in the General Extension Division <strong>of</strong> the<br />
<strong>Oregon</strong> State System <strong>of</strong> Higher Education cannot exceed IS term hours.<br />
Master <strong>of</strong> Business Administration<br />
The requirements for the degree <strong>of</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Business Administration are<br />
listed under SCHOOL OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION.<br />
Master <strong>of</strong> Education<br />
The Master <strong>of</strong> Education is a pr<strong>of</strong>essional degree in the field <strong>of</strong> education.<br />
Programs <strong>of</strong> study leading to this degree are designed to provide graduate training<br />
for teachers in either the elementary or the secondary schools. At the discre-
