Jones, Class <strong>of</strong> '43, was killed on December 26, 1944 in the Battle <strong>of</strong> the Bulge.<br />

The scholarship has been endowed by lvlrs. Eleanor Jones Mumm and Mr. and<br />

Mrs. Frank C. Jones.<br />

Quota International Scholarship. The Eugene, <strong>Oregon</strong> chapter <strong>of</strong> Quota<br />

International awards a fee scholarship to a junior woman.<br />

Marjorie Thompson Reynolds Scholarship. A scholarship covering tuition<br />

and fees is awarded annually to an upper-division member <strong>of</strong> a <strong>University</strong> sorority.<br />

The scholarship, supported by Eugene City Panhellenic, is a memorial to the late<br />

Mrs. Marjorie Reynolds.<br />

Rockwell Scholarships. Several $165 scholarships, endowed through a bequest<br />

from the late Mrs. Mary E. Rockwell, are awarded annually "to assist<br />

worthy, ambitious, and needy young men and women to acquire an education" at<br />

the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong>, "so that they may be better fitted and qualified to appreciate<br />

and help to preserve the laws and institutions <strong>of</strong> this country."<br />

Loretta Showers Rossman Scholarships. One or two scholarships, varying<br />

from $250 to $500, are awarded annually to worthy students in memory <strong>of</strong> Loretta<br />

Showers Rossman, a graduate <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong> in the Class <strong>of</strong> '10.<br />

Rotary Club Scholarships. Four scholarships covering tuition and fees are<br />

awarded annually to freshmen from the Eugene, <strong>Oregon</strong> area, on the basis <strong>of</strong><br />

scholarship, character, and need. The scholarships are supported by the Rotary<br />

Club <strong>of</strong> Eugene.<br />

Hazel P. Schwering Memorial Scholarship. A $300 scholarship, named in<br />

honor <strong>of</strong> the late Mrs. Hazel P. Schwering, is awarded annually to an outstanding<br />

junior woman. Funds for the scholarship are raised by the Heads <strong>of</strong> Houses and<br />

friends <strong>of</strong> Mrs. Schwering.<br />

Silva Scholarship. A $300 scholarship, endowed by Julio W. Silva <strong>of</strong> Eugene,<br />

is awarded annually to a graduate <strong>of</strong> a Lane County, <strong>Oregon</strong> high school, preferably<br />

a student from the Eugene-Springfield area. The award is made on the basis<br />

<strong>of</strong> scholarship, leadership, character, and need.<br />

Richard Shore Smith Memorial Scholarship. A $600 scholarship is awarded<br />

annually to a <strong>University</strong> man on the basis <strong>of</strong> scholastic performance, character,<br />

leadership, interest and pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in sports, and need. The scholarship is supported<br />

by the income from an endowment given to the <strong>University</strong> by Dr. and Mrs.<br />

Donald B. Slocum <strong>of</strong> Eugene, <strong>Oregon</strong> as a memorial to Mrs. Slocum's father, the<br />

late Richard Shore Smith, Class <strong>of</strong> '01.<br />

Mary Spiller Scholarship. A scholarship <strong>of</strong> approximately $250 is awarded<br />

annually to a woman student who has been enrolled in the <strong>University</strong> for three full<br />

terms; the award is on the basis <strong>of</strong> scholastic record, character, good citizenship,<br />

and financial need. The scholarship is supported by income from the Mary Spiller<br />

Endowment Fund and the Mary Spiller Loan Fund, memorials to the first woman<br />

teacher in the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Joseph Kinsman Starr Scholarships. Approximately twenty scholarships,<br />

varying from $300 to $700 according to financial need, are awarded annualIy to<br />

<strong>University</strong> men students in memory <strong>of</strong> Joseph Kinsman Starr, a graduate <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Law in the Class <strong>of</strong> '07. For eligibility, students<br />

must have strong academic records, must be residents <strong>of</strong> communities <strong>of</strong> population<br />

<strong>of</strong> 5,000 or less, and must be descendants <strong>of</strong> early American pioneers.<br />

William W. Stout Scholarships. Several scholarships, ranging in amount<br />

from $750 to $1,250, are awarded annually to worthy students who need financial
