(3) Submission <strong>of</strong> a thesis presenting an original and major contribution<br />
to the understanding <strong>of</strong> the thesis subject, for a minimum <strong>of</strong> 18 term hours <strong>of</strong><br />
credit (the student must enroll for 3 term hours in Thesis in each term the thesis<br />
is uncompleted after he has passed his comprehensive examinations, up to a maximum<br />
<strong>of</strong> 36 term hours).<br />
(4) Examinations, including: (a) a qualifying examination, normally taken<br />
during the student's second term <strong>of</strong> doctoral studies; (b) written comprehensive<br />
examinations, not less than one academic year before the student expects to<br />
complete work for the degree, covering the required five areas <strong>of</strong> study-see (2),<br />
above; (c) a final oral examination on the thesis.<br />
Reading knowledge <strong>of</strong> foreign languages is not required.<br />
Research. Doctoral candidates are expected to become actively engaged in<br />
the research program <strong>of</strong> the school. Opportunities for research experience are<br />
provided in connection with projects <strong>of</strong> individual faculty members and in the<br />
comprehensive program <strong>of</strong> the Bureau <strong>of</strong> Business Research.<br />

Accelerated introduction to principles and procedures <strong>of</strong> accounting and the<br />
use <strong>of</strong> accounting data as a basis for business decisions; intensive survey <strong>of</strong><br />
the data-creating process, followed by study <strong>of</strong> asset valuation, income<br />
measurement, cost analysis and control, and budgeting. Open only to graduate<br />
students who have not completed a college-level course in accounting.<br />

Accelerated study <strong>of</strong> business statistics; decision theory applications in business;<br />
probability, estimation, hypothesis testing, uses <strong>of</strong> subjective probability,<br />
introduction to regression analysis. Open only to graduate students who have<br />
not completed BS 232, BS 333 or equivalent. Prerequisite: one year <strong>of</strong> college<br />
mathematics.<br />

<strong>of</strong> the culture <strong>of</strong> the region where the language is spoken may be substituted for work in<br />
a field <strong>of</strong> study other than business.<br />
