Fees for the use <strong>of</strong> practice rooms, paid by all students enrolled for private<br />
instruction, are: $4.00 per term for one hour a day ($2.50 for rooms without a<br />
piano) ; $7.00 per term for two hours ($5.00 without a piano) ; $10.00 per term<br />
for three hours; $12.00 per term for four hours. The organ practice fee is $10.00<br />
per term for one hour a day.<br />
Curricula in Music<br />
THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC <strong>of</strong>fers undergraduate curricula leading to the<br />
Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts and Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Music degrees and graduate work leading to the<br />
Master <strong>of</strong> Arts and Master <strong>of</strong> Music degrees.<br />
In the undergraduate program, the candidate for the B.A. degree takes approximately<br />
one-third <strong>of</strong> his work in music and two-thirds in fields outside the<br />
school. B.A. candidates are advised to plan their programs to broaden their understanding<br />
<strong>of</strong> music in its relations to other humanistic fields; studies in art, philosophy,<br />
history, languages and literature, speech al1Ct drama, and the dance are<br />
especially recommended.<br />
The curricula leading to the B.Mus. degree are more rigorously pr<strong>of</strong>essional;<br />
the student takes approximately two-thirds <strong>of</strong> his work in the School <strong>of</strong> Music<br />
and one-third in fields outside the school.<br />
The programs outlined below show only tire minimum requirements; additional<br />
studies may be required in the light <strong>of</strong> individual needs.<br />
Lower-Division Major Requirements. Completion <strong>of</strong> the following lowerdivision<br />
work in music is required for admission to all upper-division degree programs:<br />

All entering students are required to pass a test in piano pr<strong>of</strong>iciency or enroll<br />
in Basic Piano (Mus 50) until they have attained the required pr<strong>of</strong>iciency. The<br />
test must be passed before enrollment in Music Theory II.<br />
History <strong>of</strong> Western Civilization (Hst 101, 102, 103) or Problems <strong>of</strong> Philosophy<br />
(PhI 201), Elementary Ethics (PhI 202), Elementary Aesthetics (PhI 204)<br />
is recommended for the satisfaction <strong>of</strong> the social science group requirement; General<br />
Psychology (Psy 201, 202), Psychology <strong>of</strong> Adjustment (Psy 204), with<br />
laboratory (Psy 208, 209, 210), is recommended for the satisfaction <strong>of</strong> the science<br />
group requirement.<br />
Candidates for the B.A. degree and voice majors working toward the B.Mus.<br />
degree must acquire pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in French, German, or Italian equivalent to that<br />
expected after two years <strong>of</strong> college study <strong>of</strong> the language.<br />
Aesthetics (PhI 204) and either Introduction to the History <strong>of</strong> Art (AA 204,<br />
205,206) or World Literature (Eng 107, 108, 109) are required for all candidates<br />
for the B.A. degree.<br />
All candidates for the B.Mus. degree specializing in performance must, during<br />
their lower-division years, attain performance pr<strong>of</strong>iciency equivalent to that<br />
required for the completion <strong>of</strong> Mus 290.
